http://www.dataplay.com

<< Many consumer electronic manufacturers are working on DataPlay-enabled devices and will release their product plans beginning in January 2001 A 500MB DataPlay digital media can hold 5 hours of CD quality music, 11 hours MP3 music, hundreds of high-resolution digital images, dozens of multimedia e-books, 1 hour MPEG-4 video or 500 MB of documents for around $10. DataPlay will be releasing a DataPlay digital media future generation roadmap in 2001 >>

Awesome! I can use that for my mp3 player rather than paying 150 bucks for a crappy 64mb!

Actually, I was a big fan of the cartoon as a kid and had most of the toys...but I have never seen the movie. I'll order it on DVD one of these days.

Maybe I'm just stupid, but I fail to see the advantage of these disks.
You compared them to a recordable CD....which holds 650 MB...a whole 150 MBs more than this dataplay thing
and it can be read in any computer, and also by MP3 CD players which are becoming more and more common.
Plus you can get them for like 20 cents a piece. What real advantage does this dataplay thing have if its not re-writeable, holds less than a CDR, and requires new hardware?

size (heh, looks like a little MD, IMO, cool).
whether or not it will be worth it depends on how much it will cost us comsumers.
altho, these will have moving parts, they are discs.... I'd still rather have something like CF in my digicam (if i had one... grr :().

one thing to add, since it seems to be a little MD, i doubt there will be an easy way to adapt it to CF or similar.

hrmm.. now that i read "Now imagine one disc just a little larger than a U.S. quarter ".... hrmm.. now that's small. but still, seems like it would involve too much mechanics to adapt... who knows.

Can you fit a CD into a PDA or a portable MP3 player?? I didn't think so! This thing is the size of a quarter. A 650MB CD is about 10-20 times the size.

THIS IS NOT FOR DESKTOP SYSTEMS. IT IS FOR PORTABLE DEVICES--SIZE MATTERS HERE.

If you follow the link or even read what it says, you'll see this :D

Try sticking a CD-R into your cell phone, try it with your PDA too! I hope you get the picture?

okay the size matters argument is valid when you're talking about cell phones and PDAs.
I can definitely see how it'd be nice to have quarter size disks with lots of info on 'em...it'd be like the little discs in Starship Troopers and Demolition Man :)

I'm a little surprised that its not rewriteable though. The site doesn't really give any technical information.
Seems like it uses optical technology similar to minidisks...so you will need more moving parts like Ingyuen said.
you'd be lucky to get a CF adapter small enough to effectively use it in a digital camera. You'll most likely need new hardware to use it.

Didn?t we need new hardware to burn/right CD-R?s? I also needed new hardware to use Iomega?s ZIP, JAZ disk too. Nothing new IMO.

bah .. cdr is better ... like 20 cents for 700MB media ...

and mp3s ... just get an mp3 diskman ... I have had my MpTrip mp3 diskman for quite a while now and its awesome ...

but i agree this is way better then zip drive ... i got rid of my zip drive in the spring of 1998 .. a few months after getting a CDR ... When they come out with something cheaper/faster/and bigger then cdr ... then i shall rejoice ......

i remember back when cdr's were $10, took an hour to burn, and you had to leave the room so that you didn't shake the drive. ah, those were the days.

that iPaq is getting a little large, eh NSF4?

<< ONLY $10? I bought 550MB CDRs that were $10 each 5 years ago. >>

<< HMMMMMMMMMMM ........................ a small CD-R for $10? YEAH RIGHT?? how is this a good thing? >>

Do you guys even read? THIS IS FOR PORTABLE DEVICES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT COMPUTERS!!!! Meaning PDA's that use CompactFlash cards or Multimedia cards, and portable MP3 players that use Compact Flash media. Even the title of this thread says "PDA & MP3 player users rejoice"

DAMNIT, WHY DON'T PEOPLE READ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How are you gonna use a CDR in a PDA??? Tell me???? TELL ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:|

ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

A 340MB microdrive costs $250. These dataplay discs cost $10.
A 512MB Compact Flash card costs $1500

NFS4,

Don?t bother, they have no clue what the hell they are talking about. Like I?ve said, try sticking a CD-R in your CELL PHONE! A CD-R is bigger then MY PDA, maybe you guys haven?t seen a PDA! Ever heard of Palm? I suggest you go to your local CompUSA, Best Buy or whatever and ask the rep where the PDA section is and that you need to be educated on the size of a PDA!

Or, you can just click on this link here to see a PDA for the first time!

PDA?s

Also, for you people who need an illustration to understand what NFS4 was trying to say, while here you go:

Cell Phone

Let me see a CD-R do that!!!

Note that I capitalized ONLY in my last message. If you think that something that is $10 that is non rewritable is cheap, then you better save up. $10 for a piece of WORM media is for 5 years ago.
