The packaging technology must improve to keep shrinking the process and until it does parallelism looks to be the answer. CPUs in huge arrays working in parallel=supercomputers. Why not use that logic to push desktop and workstation performance to higher levels of performance until the manufacturing challenges these companies face can be overcome?


What if thanks to the load balancing tech they are able to make this tech adaptive so that you can add a next gen card as the second in the config and have the capability to put the greater load on it while still adding the performance of the older card on top of it? I just think it's too early to put a fork in this tech and call it done, or accuse it of being a smoke&mirrors marketing ploy ect.
 
Actually it IS for the budget crowd.

Ordinarly you'd buy a single processor card say $350 then the next or a couple generations later buy another $350 card. total cost to stay current = $700

Now you can buy a $350 card, play a year then double performance by adding a now $200 indentical card. Total cost to stay curent $550.

Yeah, but some day these $400 cards will cost 100$. Then you buy one now, then buy one later at 70$ to increase your performance by what..say 70-90%

I guess the only flaw in that is your budget computers are very very unlikely to ever come with dual video slots. who knows. I could see it falling into midrange grasp pretty firmly, a bit of the wow factor the average gamer trickling down from the hardcore gamers.

I can't say I particularly like the idea. It does seem a bit gimmicky for the desktop. But I can't say I wouldn't buy it. IMHO the performance crown goes to the winner of the race regardless of the price..and I'd try to afford that with all my might.
 
I love how nVidia has this ace up their sleeves the whole time. Just when you thought it was a fools errand to buy anything but an X800 if you were looking for a next-gen card, now you have a strong argument not to.

But what if buying the ace from the dealer cost more than the pot? 😉

I am very excited by this, mainly because I don't buy the newest stuff, actually usually at least 1 generation behind ( I just put togther my xp2500 5 months ago). In 2 years or more when I upgrade again, I will be able to buy a ~$250 card and have decent performance, then a year later, just add another card that will now be ~$125 and get a nice performance boost without much of a cost. This will be another simple and fairly cheap upgrade to keep your puter able to keep up another year. Ram and sometimes the processor are the other things that fit into this category.

Wouldn't nVidia be shooting themselves in the foot by upsetting the upgrade imperative?
