So I'm in a weird place here. I game and my wife doesn't. She likes to read and is in med school right now so she's really busy with stuff doing her medical rotations. We don't get to see each other much....so I play more video games now than ever when she's not around. She asked me about Xmas stuff and we ended up walking into Gamestop.

I'd never played Rockband or Guitar Hero....but she talked me into picking up a guitar...and she picked up the other. We played about 5 rounds before she said, "That's really fun...we might need to get this for Xmas."

I've been racking my brain trying to find a good game for her to play. My question....which of the available Guitar Hero or Rockband sets is the best? I assume there's a slight difference, but I'm looking for the one that's the most fun, has the best gameplay, and the best feeling guitar.

I love rock band 2. There are many more songs up for DLC once you get bored with the built in songs. You can also import songs from rock band 1 into the game and expand your library even more.

Should I pay $200 and go for the set with the drum pads and everything? Just wondering if it's worth it...or if I should just pick up a guitar and the game.

Does Rock Band have any downloadable songs avialable? I ask since it's $70 for the game & a guitar controller.

my advice: pick up the RB1 set and buy RB2 separately if you're just looking for a good time. The new RB pads are quieter and the new guitar is wireless, but sacrificing those two things gives you 130 songs. RB has a huge amount of DLC, including a lot of chick-compatible songs.

Buy it and have fun. RB/GH is one of the few wife-friendly franchises around. She'll love to beat on the drums when she's mad at you.

Yes, as I said rock band has tons of songs available. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 350 I think now.

Buy the RB2 full set. The drums are much (like 100%) better and I haven't tried it but I hear the guitar is better.

Rent RB1 and pay 5 dollars to rip all the songs to your hard drive.

I think you can still get a gh explorer controller at Toysrus for 10 dollars but maybe that ended today. If you want 2 guitars.

RB has almost 500 songs available. Like 480 something. They also have at least 3 more full albums to come out before years end.

I think the albums left to come are

No Doubt - best of
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Texas Flood ---Pure win
Janes Addiction - Nothing's Shocking

Seems like there was one more though.

If I bought RB2, could I still download RB1 DLC with it? I just have GH right now and well... I want to play Muse's Hysteria (which is a RB1 DLC... unless you're a bloke from across the sea).

Okay, I assumed so and just wanted to make sure. I'll have to poke around to see which has better tracks and such... or maybe just get both. Hmm who knows.

All DLC is compatible with both games. The songs that came with the RB1 disc are importable for $5 to have as songs available to play in RB2.

I would also go for the RB2 full set. While she may have liked the guitar, the drums will probably be much funner/easier for her as a girl. In my experience with friends, the girls gravitate toward singing and playing the drums, with guitar playing being the least played. The learning curve with guitar is alot higher than it is with drums imho.

Really? I thought guitar was easier than the drums :x. But I still can't play anything more than Medium (nor have I really tried). That being the reason why I don't want to spend much just to play one song. I could just look for it on Frets on Fire (I have a huge song pack for it), but it's just not the same (even though I play FoF on a PC that's hooked up to my TV).

If we're talking about non-gamers who are not used to hand-eye coordination as much as gamers are I always had a much easier time explaining the drums and them picking it up quicker instead of a guitar: "hold the colored button down on the neck and strum when the same color hits the line at the bottom" vs "when the red icon hits the bottom, bang on this"

With everyone that I have played RB/RB2 with, learning the guitar is many times easier than drums. Drums require a lot of limb independence, especially when using the kick pedal.

Females almost always hate games but mrsskoorb also plays GH and it's the first game in many years besides the PC one where you are a waitress and have to bus tables that she's enjoyed, so she's played a few hours of GH in the past several days.
