Holy Crap! - Klipsch Promedia Ultra 5.1's.....daddy likey

Just got in my new Klipsch Promedia Ultra 5.1's to replace some pretty old-n-crappy boston acoustics. And let me say "DAMNNNNNNNNN". I had no idea games could sound like this!! These things are on par w/my MUCH more expensive home theatre rig!

And w/HL2.....let's just say you need to hear them to believe it. It makes it a whole new game.

And w/Doom III....I now have to wear a pair of Depends everytime I start this game up. You haven't played D3 until you've played it in surround sound.

And w/music.....flawless. I plugged in the HQ DVD Audio 24-bit sampler disk that came w/my Soundblaster Audigy2 Plat, and my jaw just sat there. So THAT's what it's supposed to sound like!

Anyways, these things are quite expensive, but if you really want the best, these are it. I listened to the logitech 5.1's as well, and they're pretty awesome--don't get me wrong. But they lack the crisp highs and chest-shattering bass that these things put out. But if you can't quite justify the Klipsch price tag...the logitech's are a great 2nd place.

A+++++++++ Highly Recommended!

I concur... best 'novice' 5.1 powered speaker setup on the planet imho...

novice = not spending 10k on home theatre setup

'nother vote, got mine from dell on monday night, been like a kid in a candy shop listening to all my music and learning what it's supposed to sound like. and i still don't have the rear speakers set up yet. that's tonights task, then it's time for some gaming ... if my heart can take it!

make sure you break 'em in for a good 24 hrs before any SERIOUS gaming. 🙂 Wouldn't want to ruin your $350 investment.

my advice....play a cd at normal volume nonstop for 24 hours.....then, warn the neighbors and flex your tensor tympani. 🙂

But I wouldn't be surprised if the mid's and high's of the swans were better. (Although I can't really image anything sounding much better than these 🙂 , but I know Swans are quality speakers).

I got the Swans M200 and the Dayton 10" subwoofer (not the DIY kit).

Total ~300 bucks.

It's incredible, it really is. My music wakes me up as an alarm now, and I'm loving every moment of it.

And talk about looking like class and high quality..haha.

those swans are nice. I had a pair before giving them to a friend. I use the promedia 5.1's which is better for gaming IMO. The swans were better for music but I have my computer feeding a HT reciever and regular 6.1 speakers for that. The swans have anice mid to high but the bass is not that great. I also like surround too much for gaming. stereo 2.1 only just doesnt cut it for me. I like being able to here things all around me. You get used to it to the point that I can tell within 20 degrees of where the sound is coming from. It helps pinpoint your targets in a FPS game.

Which Logitech 5.1s? Z-5300, Z-680, or Z-5500?? I have not been able to find a store that has the Z-5500 out on display for listening..

the Z-5500's....a couple of my friends have 'em. There great....but I think it's worth the extra cash for the Klipsch. imho.

I'm thinking of getting the Logitech z-640s because they are super cheap and i have never had a 5.1 setup before. I hear they are pretty good performers?

one day the wife might free up enough funds for me to spend some real cash on speakers. hahah YAH RIGHT.

for computer gaming, light music listening in a small to medium size room, the Z-640's are a great bang for the buck. Acompany with a decent 5.1-6.1 capable sound card.

for HT movie/TV Fluance is arguably the best HT set under $500.

would the Audigy gamer I have still be considered decent?

They are nice soundindg aren,t they but be prepaired I have Had mine 3 years . had to replace 2 because of amps melt down. Last time was 3 weeks ago man I was pissed. but there a great company had know problem with RMA . but the last time I opted for the GMX models and becaues there cheaper they gave me the second subwoofer now these babies sound great also . Tech told they have had problems with the pro media amps but Zero problems with the GMX. THEY are great sounding though good luck with yours.

Out of curiousity, how would these compare to my (soon to be completed) speaker setup? For the main channels, I have two lightly-used 30 year old Advent (series 2?) bookshelf speakers which sound awesome, a Cambridge Ensemble IV subwoofer, two Audioreflex (old JVC high-end spinoff) mini-bookshelf speakers for rear channels, and a KLH cheap-tastic center channel. I'm going to use it with a Sherwood 6015 5.1 600w reciever, and the S/PDIF output thingamajig on my Inspiron 9100. It's piecemetal, but at a whopping 135$ (25$ for the advents, 30$ for the subwoofer and center channel, 5$ for the rear channels, 77$ for the reciever) it's an affordable solution which can also play records, DVD's, and all those other home-theater things.

Yup, the Ultra's are fantastic! I had the PM 5.1s, but they died and Klipsch sent me the Ultras as their replacement. The PM 5.1s were awesome, but the Ultras are even more impressive with better Bass and better Treble.

I think so, that's what I have and it sounds great IMO. Probably a noticeable difference with other cards though.

depends on what you need it for. for games it is good since games arent exactly highest quality audio reproduction. for music, there are better choices. depending on your speaker/headphone setup however, you may or may not appreciate the difference.

It's pointless to go from MP3 to a lossless codec. You're just wasting hard drive space. Once you compress your audio down into MP3s, you've lost some of the original audio quality forever (hence the term "lossy"). Even if you convert the MP3s into a lossless codec, the missing information cannnot be restored. You have to encode with a lossless codec from your original audio source (CD, DAT tape) to get truly lossless audio.
