I woke up one morning shaking and feeling really cold, so i got up to go get a drink of water and nearly threw up then fainted for like a minute. Next thing i know i'm being thrown into an ambulance.

I spent the day in the ER, while they did a EKG among a million other things to me and at the end of the day they tell me i'm completely healthy and that there is absolutely nothing wrong with me.

You haven't even received it all yet. When I went I received 3 different bills. Isn't health-care great.. :)

I went in because I lost all my balance and spent a few hours waiting in the ER to be looked at. By the time the Dr. got to me I felt better so they did absolutely nothing for me and still charged me 725.00.. The first bill was for the visit, the second was for the dr. and the third I have no idea.

you do realize that you are still paying for the high fees in the end through higher premiums, right?

You know, I could do those for free for you...2 little machines. I like how the ER visit was more than everything else combined.

Yeah, I sprained my ankle half a year ago so I went to my doctor to get checked out (note that it was a regular doctor not an ER one). He took a look at me and then sent me to get an MRI done on the ankle. The insurance paid for it but when I went over my insurance documents later that year the bill came out to $1500. So now, if I can get out of the bed on my own I try not to go to the doctors.

Yeah, $1300 sounds cheap - my sister had her tonsils out at one point and pneumonia (severe) at another. The bill for each was close to $7000 including the overnight stays.

Insurance is soooo worth it.

Funny thing, the lady in the next room was being yelled at by her doctor...... Seems she just finished eating a box of dunkin donuts her
Husband brought her, even though she had surgery in an hour and was told not to eat anything.... She told her doctor she could not help
it since they looked so good and she was sooo hungry. The doctor just sighed and left....

Bah, that's nothing. Last time I was in the hospital it came to $19,000 (I think I was in for 5 or 6 days) and yes I pay out the wazoo for insurance.

healthcare is so expensive, A because all the materials used are new and never used again, (besides the EKG and pulseOx monitor lead cables and the pulseOx finger clip) but more importantly because of all the deadbeats, and illegal aliens who don't / can't pay for it and go to the ER for care everytime they have the stomich flu.

Agreed.

You're probably gonna get flamed now for saying deadbeats and Illegal immigrants should not get Emergency care.

Here come the bleeding hearts.

And if something goes wrong during surgery because she ate before hand, she'll sure for malpractice. Sigh.

Good. Now what would be really nice is if she had to pay for everything out of her own pocket because she couldn't follow simple instructions. It amazes me that people have such a lack of common sense and will power.

I didn't say they shouldn't get emergent care, dieing from a GSW, amputation, pentrating chest trama, MI, other immediate life threatening issues in which they would die close to immediatly without care. I'm saying we shouldn't have to fit the bill for stupid crap such as ear aches, runny noses, termenal illnesses...crap like that.

btw wouldn't be the first time I've been flamed, and it certainly won't be the last ;). So if your planning on flaming me, just be aware that I really couldn't care less. And that if your trying to talk some "sense" in to me, your wasting your time. I however am open to your opinions as long as they don't include unprovoked attacks on me. I don't like having to pay for other people not taking care of themselves, not saving and spending money wisely, and comming here unprepared. "I pay for my life, I don't want to have to pay for yours." and yes I pay taxes. I know everyone deserves a second chance, but some of these people, never try to change.

I don't think someone should suffer an agonizing death because they are poor, hop them up on pain medication make them confortable, but don't keep them breathing if there's no hope.

One of the reasons why doctor's tell patients not to eat before surgery is because the anesthesia makes them nauseous. My dad is an anesthesiologist, and when he worked at an outpatient center, he'd give his patients a call the night before informing them not to eat anything in the morning, not even a glass of orange juice. If they had pills to take in the morning, he told them to drink a few sips of water.

Well what you have to realize is that for that bill, the ED will get reimbursed less than 40% of the allowable charges (not all of thoise will be reimbursed at all by your insurance). In the end that hospital will be lucky if it collects $350 for your visit. Now you can take that number and subtract all of their inherent expenses (security, nurses salary, MD salary, medic salary, secretary/registrar's salary, malpractice insurance, housekeeping, overhead, free service for others who do not pay, supplies, and so on).

Now you understand why even with those exorbitant bills hospitals are all going bankrupt. You can't make money taking care of sick people in the US unless you practice alternative medicine and have your own brand of vitamins and a radio talk show.
