So what neat audio/video toy(s) are you going to buy yourself? ;)

Yeah I know perhaps it should be in Off Topic but I figured it wouldn't hurt anything by being in here either.

Should I be scared that you're mentioning this before Bryophyte made the August 15th thread?

I guess I would have to be pretty bitter and lame to lock my own birthday thread even though it probably shouldn't be in here ;)
You did mention AV equipment though... so I guess it's ok :p

Unfortunately I don't really have the funds to buy anything fun right now and still feel like I have a good enough financial safety net.

My old computer died fairly recently so I ended up spending $800-ish on new parts for the one I'm using now.

To get this thread back on the right track, maybe I'll turn this into a semi-realistic AV&HT wish list. Maybe others can add their own semi-realistic wish lists to this thread too.

1. New projector - I like my AE900U, but the slight vertical banding is starting to drive me nuts. It's one of those things where once you notice it's there, you can't stop looking for it. I don't have a particular model picked out for what I would get, but naturally it would be 1080p and have a throw range / zoom capability to fit my screen and mounting distance. I'd want something with a faster iris than the AE900U (if it had an iris). For kicks, I've looked over at projector central a bit lately and it looks like there are a number of solid options in the pricerange I'd call reasonable :)
One of my bosses recently got a Planar PD8130 which I haven't gotten to see yet, but he had me looking up info on it and more affordable models earlier increasing the upgraditis factor.

2. Blu-Ray player of some sort - I haven't researched this yet too specifically either (research tends to lead to temptation ;) ). From what little I have seen, the PS3 still seems to be very good value with the added bonus of being a game system as well, so I'd likely start there.

3. New pre-pro or receiver to take advantage of all the HD goodness - Again, limiting my exposure to hot new products but again due to research for the boss (who got an Integra 9.8), there seem to be a lot of great features out there that I would like to integrate into my future system.

4. Room treatments - Still staying in a semi-cramped apartment with no real room to put up any decent treatments. I fully intend to do this as soon as it's feasible.

So in conclusion, yes... I've wasted 25 years so far. Strangely, 9 years after the typical "car for your birthday" age, I will be getting my Mom's old car this year. That's quite the present, eh? 2001 Dodge Stratus with only 33k miles on it. I have nowhere to park it around here besides street parking though (which would be quite irritating during winter here in Wisconsin) so I'm delaying acceptance of the vehicle until I can actually have a place to keep it ;)

Birthday plans include going to work for HomeBrewerDude, coming home and continuing to watch Dexter (watched the first three episodes tonight), and hopefully being happy with whatever my gf gets me. For some reason I'm really not into surprise gifts usually. I think this stems from the mentality that I only like to purchase things that I know I'll use. Sunday the parents are coming over so we can have dinner for 4 at a local Italian place and I can use my $50 off $100 coupon from restaurant.com that I purchased during the 80% off sale.

Ok, I should go to bed now.

Thanks for the birthday wishes :)

happy birthday yoyo

my want list:
new receiver to replace the yamaha RX-V640. something with good DtoA and an all analog signal path for the TT setup. The yamaha does a great job, but i would like something that has finer control on the processing and signal routing. I would consider a pre/pro and separate amps too.
a better pre-amp for the TT. I have a TCC-750 and would like to upgrade to a creek obh8 or a NAD or Cambridge Audio pre-amp
a new cartridge for the TT, though this is the most un-realistic because i can probably get a new TT for not much more than the B&O sapphire cantilever cartridge.

Happy birthday!

My want list is primarily in the realm of new speakers. I'm thinking the Fluance SX-HTB+ 5.1 package, an ED A2 300 subwoofer, and then a couple ~$50-$75 (each) rear surrounds. Obviously add in any wall mounts, banana clips, or whatever. I figure it'll run ~$900.

I'd also like a full-featured 400+1 BR-D/DVD changer for < $1000, but that's not out yet, and it may not ever be. :(

The wife has been taking over the HT to watch the Olympics these days, but I can't begrudge her that, since she lets me spend all the money I want on it. :)

Happy Birthday, y0Yosan! I'd give you a sweet Integra AVR if I won the lottery.

My wish list is small, Klipsch CDT-5650-C in-ceiling speakers to bring me up to a full 7.1 setup.

Mmmmmmmmmm... "Thanks to a new patent-pending gimbal mechanism, known as Controlled Dispersion Technology? (CDT), both the high and low frequencies of the CDT-5650-C can be directed towards the listening area. Because the tweeter is independently adjustable from the woofer, this speaker offers even more precise localization."

Happy birthday!

My wish list is mostly for upgrading my computer-room system. I have an HD DVR and upconverting DVD player in there, so it's kind of like my second HT system.
  • Inexpensive 5.1 receiver (probably Onkyo SR304 refurb) for the Klipsch Promedia speakers
Additional promedia satellite for the center speaker
32" 1080P TV (pulling double duty as a computer monitor and TV)
I wanted to upgrade my main receiver and move the old one to the computer room, but I don't think that's in the budget now. The TV will have to wait quite a while too, but anyways this is a wish list, not reality ;).

Happy Birthday man! We all appreciate the wonderful help you've given us over the years! :)

My wishlist is for Microsoft to get off their duffs and give CableCard to consumers and integrate PowerDVD into Vista Media Center along with HD-DVD playback and HD Disc 5.1 output. And for multiple tuner cards (more than 2) without hacks.

Other than that, YoYo has already help me setup a sick HT system...love my 720p Mitsu HD1000u & Onkyo 305 Receiver...currently using XBMC + VMC to stream SD/HD content from my NAS...I'm pretty happy for now (until I get my own house, hehehe).

Happy Birthday man. Wish you all the best moving forward.

For my wish, I'd like to get my own place. I currently live in an apt and I guess I could afford a house but I wouldn't be able to spend money on stuff that I can do right now. Someone tell my boss to increase my salary.

If it's good enough for Joe Kane and Criterion Collection's reference system, the PS3 is a good enough BR player for me :p

Happy birthday!

I'm late to the party, but I'll say happy birthday anyway.:gift:

My wishlist:

Two sets of the B&W 800D

The HTM1D center channel.

And two DS8S to finish a 7.0 setup.

I haven't found a sub for this yet.

Whadya get?

August 14th / 15th is move-out / move-in time in Madison so part of the present was not having to help the gf move as much this year as last (and not having to help her friends move) :p
She gave me a key to her new apartment and a key to the new bike lock she got me (her brother who is very into bikes gave one of his old ones to her so she could give it to me).

EDIT: Oh, and I got the standard door decorations as work too ;)

I don't know... I haven't seen the lock yet actually. I just have the keys.
