soon to be aunt-in-law dropped off her acer aspire one netbook because her daughters or w/e hosed up the operating system and wants me to do a system restore. i'm dreading the automatic update for it to update to vista SP2 and how long that will take.

everything i install/uninstall on it takes hours to complete D: it's like using a pentium 3. how the hell do people use these? this is also her main machine :thumbsdown::thumbsdown::thumbsdown:

Computers like that run much better using embedded operating systems. It's why I've never liked Microsoft's "Windows 7 on tablets" approach.

Vista really should never be installed on Atom systems. They're not fast enough. Windows XP or a netbook specific Linux distro are the best systems for them.

So it's got software not meant to run on it and you somehow think that's the hardware's fault?

i got the taskmgr open, the cpu usage is always at 100%. i think the only OS it should run is windows 98, or damn small linux.

they shouldn't be selling netbooks w/ windows on it. and i hate atom with a passion, especially since most netbooks sell for $300-400, w/ the occasional $250 sale. pure profit for the mfr's

So you're admitting that you expect far too much out of the hardware, beyond what the hardware was intended for, and it's all the hardware's fault for not living up to your unreasonable expectations.

Okay.

Just install Tiny7, heavily nlited version. Great OS for small devices. I use this OS on my 10 year old Dell Latitude C600 laptop.

Okay.

do you have an axe to grind?? i'm just doing tech support on a POS netbook and i'm reporting my observations.

what makes you think my expectations are unreasonable, this thing is advertised a web surfing machine and it takes me 5 minutes to open up a browser.

Vista on a netbook? That would be unbearable. I've got an eeePC with Windows 7 and it runs fine for most basic tasks.

It's not the CPU's fault that some fucking dipshit put the wrong OS on it. That same mistake also doesn't justify judging the entire platform.

Do your work and stfu.

wow, your panties are really in a bunch, dik. i didnt make this thread trying to offend people, so i dont know why you're being such an ass to me. some fucking dipshit = acer, hp, dell, and every other mfr who makes a netbook. what's your point?

Atom + Windows 2003/linux = Great file/ftp server.

Atom + ION = Great HTPC.

sure, but netbooks are more marketed towards people using them as web browsers with vista or 7 installed on them. imo it's misleading to the general consumer.

you guessed it.

i might give it a shot w/ a tiny vista version or something.

that thing is such a piece of shit. i originally wanted one because of the 11.6" form factor.

it has the crippled atom running at 1.33 with the burden of vista on top of it. a lot of the mainboards have been known to cause issues or be faulty.

i would recommend xp on that thing.

I have a 532h running Windows 7 and it runs great as an internet/email/word processing/note taking sort of thing.

Of course it's running Win7 Starter. And it does have the N450.

The one you have should be running WinXP if you want Windows on it.

If it takes 5 mins to launch internet explorer like you said then something is wrong. I sell networks all the time and yeah they are slow as hell with Windows 7 on them but still faster than that. Ie takes about 5 to 10 seconds to load and most non flash heavy web sites run fine. Word processing, email and web surfing run slow but 'good enough' for most purposes on them. Forget doing anything else.

let me also add that if she was running vista for like a year on that thing imagine how many times that bitch paged to disk due to vista being a resource hog. i would run a hard drive test if you love your aunt. otherwise give her vista and its good as new!

:hmm: i still dont understand how i'm incompetant. this netbook is slow, and i'm restoring it back to the system defaults, and its still slow. i'm probably going to end up installing xp on it for my aunt w/ the minimum stuff possible. i'd get her windows 7 but i dont have an extra key for her and i dont know how much faster it would be over vista.

most people who buy these netbooks don't have the know how to install linux/ other versions of windows other than what's already given to them. i really feel sorry that this is her main machine.

I had a Dell Mini 9 that sucked with Windows XP SP3, but was pretty damned snappy with Windows 7.
