Having a naked fight in a middle of a convention? Attempted kidnap of Pamela Anderson? I mean, i was laughing my ass off, but this had to be all staged, right? Wouldn't Sacha Cohen be in jail for that stuff right now?

The Pamela Anderson part was the only segment of the movie that was scripted as far as I know.

My guess is that most of the movie, they found guys on street and invited them to participate in movie with a foreign guy trying to learn American culture. They asked everyone to sign a release and from there, it's all a joke.

Actually, I read an article about the Borat crew being on the run from Police several times during shooting. There was an arrest warrant out for Sacha Cohen in New York, and the Secret Service actually tracked him down after citizens called the FBI with terrorist suspicions. Too lazy to find the link, though.

My understanding is that this is what they do, but Cohen won't actually talk about how they go about it. I am not sure how they get waivers from people who don't know about the shooting before it starts, though (like the mortgage brokers). I assume that where he shoots at large events, like the rodeo and other sporting events, it's a condition of buying a ticket that you might be filmed - this is pretty routine stuff.

Staged?!?! Are you kidding? You mean a guy having someone follow him around with Film/Video equipment and audio is not just acting normally? Darn.

Most of it is legit, but there are parts obviously setup in advance

SPOILER

For example the prostitute he called over to the dinner party was obviously in on it, but the other people there weren't. Pamela Anderson was in on it..

Ah... definition of staged is different. I shot Mr. Doubletalk for a charity event. I considered it staged as I knew what was going to happen as did the guy pulling folks in and, of course, Durwoood Fincher. I even nodded along like I was following what he was saying. I consider that staged.

If you are wondering what the heck I am talking about, Doubletalk.

It's called a motion picture film. These are often referred as "movies". These "movies" have "actors" in them which "act" out different scenes.

but part of the appeal of the movie was that it was filming reactions of normal people...

And the appeal of Borat and other similar shows/movies is that it is not all scripted with actors.

I'd bet that most of the people in Borat, Jackass, and other films/shows of the genre sign a release/waiver, but that they are not "actors" per se and everything goes based on what the real actors do.

I think the whole movie was staged; they just filmed the movie to look the way it did.

are you all demented?! it's a MOVIE, everything is staged, scripted, and acted in front of a fully-suspecting and aware audience!

but Matrix and Black Hawk Down were definitely for real

I heard that this was how they did it as well. The person would sign a waiver saying that they'd be filmed, but they wouldn't tell them that it was all a big joke.

You think if some guy let a wild cock loose on the subway, everybody would just sit there politely? Come on.

**Some Spoilers

I believe the only thing that was staged was the Pamela Anderson scene and the part where the bear pops out of the side of the ice cream truck and freaks out the little kids.

There were some plants like finding the Baywatch magazine in the yard sale (the conversation with the lady about it wasn't staged). I read the only thing that was staged about the frat guys in the RV is that they knew they were supposed to pick him up but the rest of it wasn't staged. There was even a newspaper article of them saying that they were duped and didn't realize exactly what was going on.
