OMG! the HD on my other computer just crapped out! i have all the important stuff on it, ie, lab reports and hw that are due soon! ahh, can you guys help retrieve these files or at least boot up my OS(xp) ahh...

here is what i know:
>>I don't think there is anything physically wrong with the HD, maybe the boot sector is acting up, thats why it won't start XP.
>>When i try to boot the computer, it goes to that selection screen where i can choose if i want to start in safe mode, last working configuratoin, or normal. if i pic anyone of them, i end up with his error that saids:

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

Technical Information:
****STOP: 0X000000ED (0X80E76070, 0XC000009C, 0X00000000, 0X00000000)

>> i've tried booting up with the xp disc, the recovery thing on the disc don't work, and if i want to reinstall xp, they said i need to reformat.

>>i really don't want to reformat, this just suck. :(
>>i've learned my lesson: always backup your files!

HELP PLEZ!!!
(if you guys need more info, i'll will find it for you)

Where did this come from??? The >>'s give it away as cut and pasted from somewhere!

In case my sarcasm/joke meter is broke, put the drive in another pc and get the data.

Have you tried hooking it up as a slave drive, or secondary master on another machine and then accessing your data? If it's just the OS that's crashed you may still be able to recover your data.

I got that error on my aunts computer the other day..... i'm not really sure how the hell i fixed it, all i know is i reset the bios to default values then tried booting into a command prompt and that did not work. I then tried using the repair option from a windows 2000 CD(the pc is running xp....) it said it did not find a installation of windows 2000 and supposedly did nothing, but when i rebooted windows loaded and the pc worked fine.

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago. Simply reinstall XP over itself. Everything will remain the same, all your settings etc. None of your data is in jeopardy so relax and take an hour to fix it.

Its a known issue with WinXP prior to service pack 1.

Boot to the XP CD and goto the recovery console. Run CHKDSK /R and let it go. After that you should be fine. If that does not work then your HDD is probobly bad. Hope this helps.

You can also try fixboot and fixmbr at the Recovery Console. I've had the same problem a couple times and it worked like a charm. Didn't end up losing a thing. :)

[edit]
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
^^^
Will fix that... :)

okay guys, i am back.

hmm, i can't seem to access the files when the hd is acting as a slave. everytime i try to access the F: drive, it saids program not responding :(. And also, when i was booting up xp, xp did a verifying check on the hd and it took about an hour to do it. it displayed a whole list of "File record segment XXXXX unreadable" I don't think the hd was fully verified, i saw some error on the verification screen and XP started to boot.

Sounds like the HDD might be going bad. Find a way to get your sh!t off it.

^ Unqualified opinion.

hmm...at first i thought it was because of a language barrier...older OS's can't recognize other languages (ie. chinese, etc)...and will fail to read the files....but i can see that ur running XP...unless you didn't install the language packs, it shouldn't have a problem reading the files....maybe that's it..donno......have nortons run a disk doctor on it...

ok. you can still save all your data form the harddrive ( as long it is not phisically damaged). use software called r-studio, it will allow oyu to restore all data to another harddrive. then you can format this one and see what is worng with it.

there's a software called getdataback by runtime. I've used it and it's GREAT.
I had a FAT drive, reformated and reinstalled windows in NTFS and I can still recover data that was in FAT.

hehe, that's like at least 3 recommendations for that software. I will hafta check it out myself. I've got about 15 different data backup tools, but not that one.... You don't by any chance own that software or it's stock do you? :)
