Stupidity is sometimes fatal.

There's definitely some kind of programming bug in our brains which makes it fairly easy to convince a person, "Killing yourself is a good thing!"

Maybe it's a loophole in the whole self-preservation thing?
"Kill yourself now, and you can live even longer."
Now, how one can wrap their head around that whole "death = more life" BS, it's just totally beyond me. But it apparently is quite an easy thing for many to believe, to the point of motivating suicide.

fvck. I think I'd seen them before, but not the families with arms around each other.

I just watched that Land of the Lost movie, and it had some wisdom:

"Never trust a dude in a tunic."

If you think the photos are crazy, you should listen to the audio recording made during the massacre. Creepy (but interesting).

I was listening to the newsreel on the killing of the senator's party that went down there to bring people who wanted to leave back to usa.

As an aside... Read the wikipedia article on Jim Jones and take note of how often you see the name Harvey Milk. Maybe Mr. Milk wasn't as awesome as Hollywood would have us believe.

This and the fact that the ones that did not drink the poison at Jonestown would get shot. I would gather if many had the choice they would have run off into the jungle.

I saw only two references to Harvey Milk on wikipedia. It appears that Milk attended Jones' church and was impressed by the man, obviously, Jones was charismatic or 1,000s of people wouldn't have followed him and ultimately died for him (morons). Milk's association with Jones seemed pretty minor, they were both activists in San Francisco and knew and supported each others causes it seemed at some point or another, but I don't see anything nefarious in their association.

So supporting, defending, and endorsing one of the worst mass-murderers in the history of our nation does little or nothing to blemish one's character, huh?

one key point of most religions that ive read about is that faith transcends death. further, self sacrifice for faith is a good thing.

i tend to disagree with that.

Psh. Site is blocked from work.

Fixed.

Bah...Why the hell doesn't the software pick up quotes?

The only religious episode I can think of off-hand that approaches this one for sheer stupidity is the "Let's neuter and kill ourselves so we can catch a ride on the Hale-Bopp comet" from 1997.

(not counting all the other stupid things done in the name of religion throughout history)

Anyone else read this as Jonestown Mascara? (In my head I pronounced it Mascara) I was like, "Hmm.... A thread about fancy Mascara?"
