My Father uses this... It can make things out of Plastic, fiberglass, steel, aluminum and titanium. It is also known as a CNC Lathe. or a 5 axis mill.

On the 4th floor of the main building at MIT you can see one printing 3D cad models all the time. It's right next to a glass window so you can watch it anytime. It is a little old now so it's probably not advanced compared to these new ones

Different thing. A mill takes a block of metal/plastic/etc and carves it out into the shape you want. These 3d printers build the object from small particles.
