Yep broadband in the US is a JOKE. $45/month for slow crappy speed. I remember paying less IN CAN dollars and getting way more speed YEARS ago up north.

Yeah I pay $40/mon Canadian and my downloads go up to ~185KB/sec...I had no idea Canada had almost twice as much broadband users as the U.S. (11% vs. 6%)...whoa :Q

$34 per month for a 1.5 Mb connection. Comparatively speaking it's not a bad deal, especially not in my area. I generally get between 175 KB/sec and 200 KB/sec.

Yes Canada has almost twice as many users in terms of percentages, but the US is still number one in terms of the raw number of users.

I pay $50.00CDN per month for a 3400/800 DSL connection.

My downloads are routinely over 400KB/s. :D

So everyone saying that the major factor slowing down U.S. cable modems is "net congestion" is really full of B.S.?

Remember that Sprint ION service?? That was fast...I heard it was anywhere between 5 and 11 mbps when my sister had it in DC (she works for Sprint.) But then they went bust. I think it used a fiber connection for backbone or something.

That's what I'm saying (what the article says), there's no broadband competition out here. That's why we get freaking shafted paying $50 a month (excuse me $44.95) for Roadrunner, and that price hasn't changed (except to increase) for a long time.

Couple more paren's for good measure ()()()()()()()()()()

Well yeah the US has more people ;) I used to think that part of the problem in the US was the vast geography and infrastructure being an issue. This may partly be the case. Though canada is BETTER than the US in terms of how big it is a great amount of the Can population lives in the southern part and I wonder how much all of this plays into broadband available based on concentration of the population. The Canadian population is well spread out but most of canada is totally unused.

Japan and SK can have good broadband because they're so damn small you can run a lan party throughout either of those countries :)

US broadband sucks balls. I can get now from two options the cheapest of which is $35/month plus probably $5 for the modem. This gives me 256/128. $10/month more gets me 512/128 and $10 again gets 1.2mbps/256 I think. Really sad.

I remember paying in nova scotia $40 CAN/month for a 2-4mbps/1mbps line. Not sure if it's still that way, but that was 3 years ago.

It would be nice if the US gov't would do some serious subsidizing and drop fiber optics everywhere!

BTW this isn't a CAN vs US. If I was paying for broadband now the increased cost I'd more than make up for with the AWESOME insurance rates I have compared to NS :D

rates aren't too bad here in pheonix I spend about 35 a mounth from Cox Cable and get a 3000/300 connection. I upload at about 27.5k on average and dl at about 290k. I really don't think I would need much faster. just more applications to take advantage of the speed. (besides filling up my HD with pron)

Yeah, run some fiber to me in Madison as well. I wish I could AT LEAST get Road Runner here, but for some reasons cable companies like to have monopolies in all areas of the state, and seem to split up the territory. WTF?

Pity us in the UK who have the lowest connection rates/speeds of just about all broadband enabled countries, we're about 4 years behind due to our diabolical telephone companies and their scheming. :(
