my wife and i have a friend who has a 15 year old son. well last december her husband his dad died after a long battle with COOP (emphysema, asthma, brohoncitis all rolled into one). Well her husband was pretty controlling and the past two years while he was bed riden he pretty much didnt let their son go to school. so because of this he is way way behind in his studies and has very low self confidence.

well this week she took him to Sylvan to get tested and of course the test came back that he is only at a 6th grade level across the board. they laid out a toutring schedule over the summer and the final cost is $14,000.00 bucks!!

she doesnt make a lot of money and is condidering a loan for it. its a 15 year loan and god only knows what the interest rate is. She is a close friend and we care about them, im going over tonight to talk her out of it and help her find another route to get the help her son needs. she is also closing on her new house tonight.

I worked there for a few years. It definitely does help some students, but wow....that is a lot of money.

Stay away from those learning centers. He clearly needs help, but those places are notorious for diagnosing everyone that comes in with major problems that require lots of money to fix.

Instead of Sylvan, try and find a private tutor. It'll be cheaper and you'll get better instruction. The tutor will also drive to her house. Let's say the private tutor is 30 dollars an hour. You get him or her for 10 hours a week, which is a lot. 10 hours * 30 dollars * 12 weeks=3600 dollars. I just strongly recommend that whatever she ends up doing, that it not involve a for-profit so-called "learning center."

that sounds like good advise

if you can find a graduate student or something that can tutor him in the evenings, i bet it would be less $$

Does your friend want to put her son back into 8th grade?

I say just start him off at 6th grade. It's not gonna me too traumatic on his life, is it?

14K$ is worth it if the kid comes out having learned everything through freshman year college course material.

That would buy one year at the private school I attended from 1991 until 1998.

(Funny thing is that Georgia Tech with in-state tuition and the HOPE scholarship cost half as much per year!)

It's probably better than him playing PS2 all summer, but you're right that a 15 year loan for that is just ridiculous. There absolutely have to be cheaper alternatives. Hell, find a university student who's got the summer off and is taking education and who is MOTIVATED, drop them $5k and tell them it will be a full time job bringing this kid's education level up.

I did policy debate from 1996 until 1998. What about you?

You wasted $150,000 on an education you coulda got for $1.50 in late charges at the public library.

Yep, if you could buy an education Paris Hilton would not be so stupid.
