Holy cow.....write caching enabled vs WD MyBook 2TB vs 3rd party transfer apps???

Long story short........

Trying to set wife up on a good backup plan.

Inherited WD MyBook 2TB (wdbaaf0020hbk-01 usb 2.0) was going so ridiculously slow, I almost sh!tcanned it. 14.3kb/sec. (Yes, I just said 14.3kb/sec....trying to transfer 3GB of data)

On a suggestion I verify that write-caching is disabled and after digging thru which of the 4 volumes, the stupid friggin thing is called, I enable and speeds are now in the few-MB/sec. (still not great but MUCH improved)

I, myself, use a USB 3.0 drive that has no such issues as I formatted and treat it as a thumb drive anyway.....BUT......

Any suggestions for 3rd party software to handle transfer rates better than even now???

Don't know if it'll speed it up but I use Teracopy mainly because it has auto-CRC check.

I know there is always that one person on the internet who gets random problems but I recently installed the latest stable release of TeraCopy to copy 500GB of data and CRC check at the end on my 100% stable Windows 7 PC and the program crashed after 6% with no clear indication why. I ended up using the Windows file transfer system instead and a program called Checksum Compare afterwards.

And since that crash my explorer.exe crashes randomly

Believe it or not, that can be perfectly normal for that, depending on how you have it hooked up, and the size of said files.

If it's running at USB 2.0, and the files are not mostly <4K, you should be getting much faster speeds. It might be alright, but see if you can check it with WD's diags, or a SMART reader, to be sure.

I'd check the drive with WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic and see if it passes the tests just to be safe that the drive is performing properly. Here's a link: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=Ns9sAh
You can try it on another computer with another cable and see if the speeds are the same.
