JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (Reuters) -- A South African soccer referee pulled a gun and shot dead a coach who questioned one of his rulings, police said.

Inspector Mali Govender of the Grahamstown police in the Eastern Cape province said a fight broke out after the referee gave a yellow warning card to a player in a local match on Saturday.

"There was an altercation... and the referee became threatened when the other team approached him because they were angry," Govender said. "So he pulled out a gun and killed the coach of the visiting team."

Govender said the coach died on the pitch while the referee fled the scene. Police were confident of making an arrest soon, she added.

South Africa has one of the world's highest murder rates with an alarming 47.4 murders per 100,000 people, or eight times the figure for the United States

Now THAT'S why you should say things behind people's backs, instead of to their face.

That is nuts though!

With all the violence that surrounds soccer (hooliganism, etc.), I think the world should declare a moratorium on the sport for five years. Maybe things would settle down a little.

I hated being a sideline ref for soccer. No matter how good the call, some coach would always b!tch about offsides calls / etc. It sucked so much. Granted, I never felt the need to shoot the coach over it, but I didn't ref in Africa either :p.

Yeah, it should be more like sports here, where athletes never shoot anyone. ;)

This kind of crap has less to do with soccer and mroe to do with the state of those nations...

Yea, and they should shut down the NBA, cuz we all know that every NBA player is a thug, who does nothing but smoke weed and shoot people... or kill the NFL, because those guys just push dope and shoot each other...

(note the severe inflection of sarcasm)

Exactly and why Fifa is allowing the 2010 World Cup to take place there is beyond me.

What scares me is that 47.4 murders per 100,000 isn't the world's highest murder rate.

Always amuses me when soccer fans talk about those crazy American sports, ignoring stuff like this ;)

you're right... they should cancel it... then the Azurri won't have to make up any excuses... like socks that are too rough, or shoes that don't fit...

:p

My take on it is that the sport is too boring. Since the players and fans are bored to death (but of course won't admit it), they instigate all the violence that surrounds it. They need to spice it up, as it obviously isn't currently working as intended. Or, in a few months when it's no longer the height of European fashion to hate Americans, they could simply adopt our superior sports.

is it just me, or does it seem a littler weird that the ref had a gun on him? WHILE refereing a game?!

FIFA is totally corrupt, like the IOC and other world sport governing bodies.
soccer in south africa pretty much is like everything else in south africa--unique to south africa.
