Put them in a plastic bag and stick them in the freezer for a couple of days. Kills the bacteria.

Did you take the shoe laces out when you washed them? Did you make sure they were fully submerged (I've have a few float on the water through the whole wash cycle)? Make sure you wash them with a good amount of bleach and other detergents.

When drying them - make sure and pull the center section that covers the top of your foot out - hang them off of a hanger in sunlight. Drying any slower will cause mildew to grow. If you have a dryer with a sweater attachment which lets you suspend items in the center of the dryer without them moving - that works great also, it's how I dry my shoes :)

Laughing uproariously at this thread.

I grew up on a farm. Take your boots off and leave them outside. Put them back on next time you work in the back 40. Never bring "outside" boots indoors.

edit: and if the smell still bothers you outside, get pigs. then you won't notice your shoes :)

There are any number of things you can do to remove the smell
- Pour a cup of baking soda in with your wash.
- Use odor eaters.
- Leave them outside.
- Pour gasoline on them and light a match.

haha. I don't see why grass-cutting shoes would smell bad though, unless you mow through a lot of dog crap.

I wore Tevas all the damn time when I was living in California. Dust + sweat = Mr Bryophyte made me keep my sandals outside. He said they smelled worse than death. So, I learned to hand wash them at least weekly with Dr Bronner's peppermint soap and a brush, then after they dried, coat them all over with a layer of Tea Tree oil. That helped tremendously.

I suppose it depends on your lawn, but mine is full of acorns and twigs falling off the oak trees, and they like to shoot at my feet:p
