Its really just like every other profession. There are many lawyers that do well for themselves. There are many lawyers that are complete failures.

oh yea, and i love how people only think of the personal injury types when they hear 'lawyer'

Im glad I became an Anesthesiologist. I was getting 250K-400K tossed in my face when I was finishing residency. That plus 6-8 weeks vacation, 40-50hr workweeks, and uber benefits.

That and my job is fun :)

a miami firm that pays 150k for a first year associate? im not gonna say the person is lying, but, come on...

at the top NY firms, base is 145k. maybe the dude was including bonus? even still, we don't talk about bonus included salaries...

It really depends on what kind of law he is practicing. IP Attorneys make obscene amounts of money, but have to work ridiculous hours doing extremely boring work.

no first-year associates make obscene amounts of money, IP or not. if you're working in a large firm, there's no difference in pay across different practice areas, and if you're working for a boutique, the pay is generally around the same as a top law firm. and any first-year associate at a top firm is going to be working ridiculous hours doing extremely boring work (though boring depends on your own personal preferences, i suppose).

So with the hours a lawyer making 150k will have to work...

yeah...that works out to about 40 $/hr.

There are tons of jobs that make 40+ an hour.

Welders make more than that an hour. My cousin who does structural welding makes 120-150 $/hr depending on the job. He pulls in 300k a year for about 20-25 hours a week work of work.

He was probably approximating by sayign 150k.... maybe he was averaging over the first 3-4 yrs of work? And yes, that is a lot of money, but you better also like your job, because you are going to be there a lot.

Interesting about welders... Of course, this is STARTING salary for lawyers. Some lawyers make well over a million a year by time they are at the top of their game.

They get paid more in Florida because of the chances they take down there.

IE

Two alligators are sitting on the edge of a swamp. The small one turns to the big one and says, "I don't understand how you can be so much bigger than me. We're the same age, we were the same size as kids. I just don't get it."

"Well," says the big alligator, "what have you been eating?"

"Lawyers, same as you," replies the small alligator.

"Hm. Well, where do you catch'em?"

"Down at that law firm on the edge of the swamp."

"Same here. Hm. How do you catch'em?"

"Well, I crawl under a BMW and wait for someone to unlock the door. Then I jump out, bite'em, shake the crap out of 'em, and eat 'em!"

"Ah!" says the big alligator, "I think I see your problem. See, by the time you get done shakin' the crap out of a lawyer, there's nothin' left but lips and a briefcase."

yeah. some partners do. So do partners and owners of welding and other construction companies. It's all relative.

I have to say my blue collar friends who are in construction related industries make just as much if not more than doctors and lawyers I know.

it's probably true... law is more of a nice stable profession that will give you a salary higher than the vast majority of other people in the US... if you want to get rich, you should go elsewhere.

I see you bought into the perception perpetrated by the ABA. The legal field is saturated as hell right now, with a million lawyers in America. For every lawyer you hear about making a 6 figure salary in a big firm, there are probably a dozen more who are either unemployed or making $50K tops in some no-name collections, insurance defense or personal injury firm.

I graduated from a similar school (tier 1 and 40-ish ranking) and most of my classmates are starting in the $40-60K range. Don't do it for the money - a lot of other fields offer more money, less aggravation and more job security. Only do it if you really want to practice law.

Speaking of insurance, I'm sure he pays a lot for malpractice insurance. not to mention the fact that if he screws up, it's likely that someone may die. If a lawyer screws up it's usully not a matter of life and death.

Yeah, if a lawyer screws up, what does the client do? Hire another lawyer!

Sorry, but NY isn't the highest paid for Law.

Actually, Texas has some of the highest paid ones.

Tied to Big Oil and such. The living standards are cheap here too, so it is a win-win.

But seriously, don't choose something primarily for money. Make sure it is something you want to do otherwise you won't last too long in that environment.

BTW. I know a few lawyers because of my field of work.

Most of them are extremely great people. Some of them are very confrontational though, but I have found that is only the case with Crim Law and Family Law.
