With D3 and SC2 coming out "soon" (eg. by 2015) I busted out my old D2 discs and reinstalled it to get in the mood. And remembered why it was so frustrating. The lag is extreme and constant. Blizzard has always been incredibly stingy with servers and bandwidth, and if this is going to be the D3 experience, I don't think I'm going to be buying it. Same goes for SC2. When the biggest, baddest monster in the game isn't Diablo but Lag, there is a problem.

Lag is rare for me on D2.

I rarely if ever lag. If a game has been up for several hours and people have left necro summons or assassin traps behind, it does get laggy, but normally, you shouldn't be experiencing much.

Also, just an FYI for those currently playing D2... now is not the time to be botting or using whatever maphacks and other tools.

Lag rarely existed in Battle.net for the last 11 years I've been playing on it.

besides the fact that battle.net does not suck, it is getting a complete overhaul for SC2

I was able to reach level 97 with a bowazon in hardcore back in cow games, so I think the lag problem your talking about is exaggerated. I have had my share of hardcore characters die to lag too, and that was a problem, but it was no worse than any other service and if you were playing softcore I don't see how it could be a problem at all.

AFAIK, lag is only really a problem on Open Battle.net for some reason. At least for me - regular Battle.net is usually fine. Once you get 8 people on the server though, it does tend to get slower, as usually not everyone has an awesome connection.

Edit: That said, I do remember dying from lag. When that happens, just quit, take the gold hit, and collect your body on the next server.

uh yea, im going to have to go ahead and disagree with you there. ive been playing d2 on bnet for about a decade and lag has NEVER been a big issue for me. sure, there is the occasional lag, but no more than happens with any online game.

Too bad you have to pay for Bnet when SC2 and D3 comes out.

How many games did you play? A few games will lag badly, but those are isolated events. Really old pvp games also lag.

yeah, last i read they were still "thinking about it" but didn't outright say it was going to be definite.

Highly unlikely, since most of the games are hosted by the players? There was mention of it but they wanted to keep the original idea of having battle.net be free.

Works similarly to guild wars and that's free to play.

as far as i had read, they really weren't sure what business model they were going to use (ads vs pay2play vs whatever else...)

If they make us pay to play on Battle.net for DIII and/or SCII I'll be sure to stop buying Blizzard games.

Definitely not. I think the issue is most of you play LOD, where you can basically get 99 in a day without knowing a thing about builds or anything. I never bought LOD because of the lag issues (I lost a godly dual leech ring while transferring it a few days before LOD release, and boycotted it ever since - I hear it sucks anyway), so I play classic where levels come hard. I'm trying to get 87 on my barb so I can gamble +2 amulets but I die a lot when I finish a WW and I just stand there with the WW animation (I can run around with it and everything, and the enemies just stand there watching), then everything catches up 5-10 seconds later and I'm dead. I don't have network issues, this is and always has been the norm for battlenet, over the course of like 4-5 different ISPs and a lot of different computers I've had since I bought the game 10 years back.

Well, since everyone here plays lagless LOD as you say, you should probably try posing this question to a D2 classic forum or get LOD.

When I fired up D2 again a few months ago to play it again since D3 was announced and I wanted to remember the story line I had no issues with Bnet and judging by the other responses it does sound like sash1 said.

There are times when it can lag like any other game but the majority of times I had no issues with it.

Me too. They already make enough money from WOW, no need to milk us D3 and SC2 lovers.

I didn't say it was lagless, I said it was so easy you're less likely to notice small spats of lag. Try reading. While you're at it, read the forum title and notice how it covers this topic? Wow, reading really IS fundamental!

Unless the game being easy means I'm playing drunk or similarly impaired, that makes no sense at all. Not to mention you can easily make LOD hard depending on how you want to play.

Everyone here has said lag on bnet isn't a big issue. So if you want possible solutions or receptive ears for your complaints, this isn't the place. That's all I suggested.
