I was just browsing Newegg for a GF3 Ti200 video card...and I noticed that Gainward has a 128mb model! I wasn't aware they had 128mb video cards...so I bought one...LOL.

"Too bad textures aren't larger than 32 MB yet."

True, but I was under the impression that the extra memory would help when playing @ high resolutions like 1600 x 1200 and above. It would also allow for the use of FSAA @ those resolutions... I was already getting a GF3 anyway...so the $40 is no big deal to me...:)

I am going to ask a question that should have its own thread: When are the damn memory prices gonna come down? Specifically DDR!:(

I am under the impression it is supposed to be guaranteed to over clock to a certain level...I'll check...:)

Zim Hosein -

I did some checking on the Golden Sample thing. It seems Gainward hand picks their cores and memory to guarantee a degree of overclocking. They even come running faster than the spec for the Ti200 states. They are supposed to run 175mhz core, and 400mhz memory, but they run @ 200mhz core and 450mhz memory right out of the box. So basically, Gainward is guaranteeing these cards to run at least that speed. Not too shabby when the manufacturer actually promotes o/cing...:)

the golden samples are well worth the little extra you pay for them.
mine does 230 core / 472 memory. i could get it higher but that as far as my o/c utility will go. if only i wasnt sooo lazy.....

You can have as many textures as you want, and the sum of those textures can easily surpass 32MB. Especially if you run an engine that is a tad more recent than that half-@ss...err I mean half life engine all the lil teeny boppers play CS (puke) on. The only reason developers code for 32MB cards is because that is what most people have in their systems now.

On the other hand, by the time 128MB cards become mainstream, they will also come with better GPUs. So in that sense, it is a waste of money, but hey to each his own.

Yeah, there was a discussion of it in another thread (in GH maybe?), and the general concensious was that anything above 64mb right now is just bragging rights. When we get other GPUs, more memory won't hurt.

It's worth the $40 for bragging rights. :D Hardly anyone has a video card with 128Mb. It's a spec you can use to awe the masses.
