I'll pass, can't risk it being a screamer.

read my new edit 😉
believe in the power of trust, its not a joke where im attempting to make you listen to a clip where you get scared... go to torrentspy and follow the links at top if you really want.. it was featured at shoutwire, to be precise

too bad most of those files linked to do not work anymore 🙁 i really wanted to hear the fireworks one mentioned in the 3rd link you provided (further down the thread)

This is more commonly referred to as binaural recording.

Basically a dummy human head is used with microphones in the ears, recording in stereo.

The end result is the real human listener hears everything as if his head were in the same pposition as the dummy.

Very cool stuff, but not new by any means. It's been around for nearly 100 years.

Viper GTS

Nothing that amazing...its the same technology as what is used in Dolby headphone to create sound images other than just right and left. I use it all the time.

We this in games. First person shoots specifically.

The Soundblaster X-Fi can do this on-the-fly in games. That's what the "CMSS-Headphone" mode is for. It takes the surround sounds in games, and modifies it to make it sound like true surround with headphones ("true" surround, as in, like, this - TRUE SURROUND - not the approximation of surround-sound 5.1 speakers try to make a go with).

Supposedly, the Audigy cards have a vastly inferior version of this algorithm, but I've never found any good details on the differences. Was fishing for opinions in this thread, actually.

But, yeah, on the X-Fi, it's awesome.

RE: The X-Fi I mentioned above.

Creative actually has a demo on their site that shows the various X-Fi effects. The "CMSS3DHeadphone On" demo is worth listening to.

Note that you need to install their Creative Demo Player (also linked on that page) to properly get the sync of audio and video in several of the demos.

It's worth checking out - it's a cool effect to have in realtime. And these are both pretty small and quick downloads.

 Games today still have a lot of improvement ahead of them.

I didn't know that about the X-Fi.

I didn't know that about the X-Fi.

Check out the demo, then. It's a lossy streaming format, so the sound QUALITY is clearly lacking, but the effect is remarkable. And it's not something that requires special game support or anything - the X-Fi can create that effect on any game that supports surround-sound.
