if you are serious about Clean Air, I suggest you look somewhere else. How about those honey well air cleaners, they can run up to 200 dollars but will sure do the job.. Do you know that NASA uses Honey well equipment on the space shuttle.

Anyone know how big of a room this is good for? For $10 I can't imagine it will clean much air. Also, and guess how loud it is?

I need a cleaner for my home server room, so I may pick several of these up to spread around the rrom.

it cleans up to 6'x9', a good air cleaner for your desk area, at least that is what i am using it for. picked on up from Target B&M. it comes with one filter with it. but make sure you buy more filters for back up since i have heard that the filter replacement is on back order on some stores such as target. for $10, it is a good health inverstment.

good luck, check you local Target.

How effective would this be in a bathroom that's 6'x9' or smaller?

In a bathroom, the moisture would probably destroy the filter within days... or, worse, yet, allow mold to grow on the filter and seed the room with spores. Yuck!

for the bathroom a ducted exhaust fan works really well for removing moisture, etc:) its not ideal but it even works to duct it out into the attic crawlspace.

Anyone find a way to lower the shipping a bit?

I want to get one of these to put next to my bed. Good idea? Bad idea? Would it bring more dust to my bed or just clean the general area of dust?

Allergies suck :(.

My wife and I are both Network Engineers, so between the two of us, we have a lot of hardware. The only true "server" is a Proliant, but it's so loud I've recently replaced it with a AMD PC.

BTW, I went to my local Target, and these were marked $20, but were OOS. The replacement filters were in stock, but for $20. I'd rather buy the whole unit for $10. I may just buy 10 of these to get free shipping, and use most for spares and for their filters. ;)

Better check the price on filters before going too hog wild. ;) Air cleaner filters can be very expensive! Have to be replaced in 4 months or so on average from what I've read.

This looks like the HAP-220 (from what I can tell). Did a search on Yahoo shopping and found them for $12.88 here (+ S&H). I think I'll order one and see what it's like before buying a bunch of filters.

Cripes, I just realized what you meant about ordering 10 for free shipping (and the filters). Were the filters >$10 at Target? If it is a decent purifier for a small room (I have a 12x12 'office' in the basement) then it would make sense to order ten. Heck, I might even take the day off just to see the expression on the UPS guy's face.

Anyone already own one? Is it fairly quiet?

They were $20(I mentioned that already). Still not bad, but I'm worried that since we have Soooooo much dust, I'll go throught them way too fast. That Ionic Breeze is sounding better and better.

Ionic Breeze

They are a total ripoff at $350, but are less of a rip-off if you buy from the auctions page (linked on their site). I have two, and I like them not because I think they do an awesome job of cleaning the air (doubtful), but because the deadly ozone they release smells so damn good. I've been known to stick my face right in front of it (and feel the "breeze" LOL) and just sniff in that wonderful smell.

I'm serious... they make the room smell good... just sort of fresh... like the smell after a thunderstorm (figures because lightning outside causes the same thing).

Anyway, you might also be able to pick them up cheaper off of ebay too. I got mine from the auction site.

One other caveat (besides the health risk of breathing in ozone) is that you have to clean the damn things every week or two. If you don't, they start "crackling"... like static electricity sounds. And cleaning them is sort of a pain... no filters to buy, but you've got to clean the nastiest dust you've ever seen off of the collection rods. I use rubbing alcohol because if you use water then you have to let it dry before putting it back into the unit or it will crackle like hell.

Still kinda cool though... cooler than I was expecting it to be. That infomercial makes it sound like a crock of sh!t. Don't get me wrong, it's not terribly exciting... just sort of exciting. It's all about the smell!

Consumer Reports rated in this month's issue the Ionic Breeze the worst of all filters in terms of price/performance.

I know this is getting a little off topic, but has anyone tried one of these?

They look like they compete with the Ionic Breeze, but can be purchased from ebay for $130 shipped, with a 3 year warranty. It sounds tempting, but I know Sharper Image makes quality products, and this company I can't be suer about... If they are good, they're about half the price of a used Ionic Breeze with no warantee.

Could you tell us what was rated better? I'm looking for cheap in the long-term, so the ionizers seem to be the way to go, especially with as much dust as I have in my house.

I believe it. It's more expensive than most HEPA air cleaners, and the volume of air it moves would pale in comparison to even the smallest air cleaner (such as the one @ Amazon for $10)--I mean, the thing uses 15 Watts, what do you expect? There's no motor, no fan to drive the air, so it takes advantage of a little physics trick. If you sit a foot away from it, you can feel the "breeze" but that's all it is.

So couple the insane price ($350) with the fact that it doesn't move the air very fast and it's not surprising that it ended up on the bottom.

At $150 they're a better deal... BTW, you can get a real ionic breeze for that on Sharper Image's auction site... they are returned units (you can bet that 99% of them were returned because people bought them on impulse and came to their senses that the things aren't worth $350)

Regardless, I still like mine!
