What's the difference between the two names?

Is it like the whole UK/England/Britain dealie?

Holland is the country where they all wear wooden clogs.

The Netherlands is the country where they have a bunch of windmills.

They are completely different countries. If you go up to someone from the Netherlands and say they are from Holland, then they will take it as as insult.

I think Holland is/was a province/state there and it used to be the most popular/powerful state and so people ended/concluded to/two call/say the whole country Holland.

Holland is a province in the netherlands. well actually 2 provinces (north, south)

the netherlands is often referred to as holland because historically holland has been the most influential.
Its almost a synonym with netherlands, in north america at least.
