how do you handle holidays that fall on a weekend?

I'm feeling a little fucked this year because Christmas/New Year's Days fall on Saturdays... they're "observed" on the Friday before, but then it means that people who cover the weekend days end up working a holiday for no compensation D: I'll be doubly screwed next year when Christmas Day/Eve + New Year's Day/Eve all fall on Saturday/Sunday.

we pay the people that cover on big holidays like xmass 3x their normal wage for that day. there aren't many of them but for certain things we have to staff them 24/7, and those guys make a killing working on those days

Holiday pay? 1.5-2x normal pay is what I have seen at past jobs.

Then again there are jobs that don't pay you anything extra for working holidays. It isn't "required".

At Hynix we had 12 hour shifts. 3 days one week, 4 days the next. If your work fell on a holiday you had to suck it up, but at least you got double pay.
Only the holiday itself counts for holiday pay. None of that "observed on the following workday" bullshit.
If you dont wanna work, move to Europe.

We get straight pay plus 1.5x for that shift (i.e. so for working 8hr on Christmas, we're paid a straight 8 and another 8 at OT rate). There are only a few holidays like that, though..not every one gets the extra pay.

It's varied, but a place I worked in the past paid the following premiums:

• 0.5x for daily overtime (anything over 8 hours)
• 1x for Saturday
• 1.5x for Sunday
• 1x for recognized holidays (I think it was Federal, plus a few more)

These were all cumulative and added to your base pay. So Saturdays was 2x your base for up to 8 hours. Sundays were 2.5x yours base up to 8 hours, 3x your base after 8.

If a holiday fell on the weekend, you'd get the 1x holiday bonus for working any of those weekend days. Best earning potential was 4x your base pay for holidays that fell on Sundays, on everything after the first 8 hours.

We didn't work weekends much; the employer saw it as incentive for clients whose work we did to be reasonable about deadlines.

I know it's not "required," but it kinda grinds me that people working on the Friday before a holiday get the compensation benefits while the people working on the *actual* holiday and sacrificing any plans get kinda screwed. :thumbsdown:

We get paid by the shift, holidays and weekends are paid at a slightly higher rate.

We get paid 16.4 hours work working holidays on top of your normal 12., so roughly 3x regular pay. If Christmas falls during the week their are three days, two if it's on the weekend.

When I worked in a call center everyone who worked there got paid 8 hours for the holiday on top of their normal pay whether they worked it or not.

Working in a hotel, where it was 5 from 7, and weekends meant nothing, everyone got an day off for Christmas, whether they worked it or not (so even if one of their two normal off days in a week was on Christmas, they got another day off to use as holiday in the future), anyone who worked it got double pay.

My mother is a visiting nurse, and some patients need to be seen every day. She gets a choice between working Christmas or working Thanksgiving. I don't think she gets any OT or enhanced compensation, but I could be wrong.

My lab is open 24/7/365.

The way I feel about holidays is that 1) I couldn't possibly care less who's working and who's not because what someone else gets paid is none of my business, 2) I'm either at work getting paid extra or I'm 3) not working on a holiday.

Bang, zoom, a non-issue.

Are you 100% sure about that? Did you ask payroll?

When I worked for Help Desk / Hourly job 24/7/365 on site coverage:

We got time and a half for the hours worked on the observed holiday + 1/5 of our weekly avg hours worth of pay. I also recall that we got the OT pay for the "actual" holiday too, not just the "observed" holiday....

Salaried 2L support (normal shifts include weekends, rotating pager): If we worked on the actual holiday or the observed holiday ... we got comp time to make up for it.

Previous Salaried prod support position: Mon-Fri with pager rotation. We got 1 comp day for each rotation.

Current salaried devel/support position: Mon-Fri with 24/7/365 pager. No comp time. Only get paged when prod support can't figure it out.
