OK, first off, let me say that I've been a lurker here for awhile, so I thought I'd take the plunge with this message. I have a tug o' war going on in my head here, People want to buy me computer parts for the holidays! I know you're all thinking, how could that possibly be bad?! Let me first start by listing my current system specs:
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Antec Truepower 350W PS W/Blue mod
P4 2.2Ghz Northwood
ABIT IC7-G Mobo
Kingston ValueRAM 1X512MB
Integrated sound (ALC650)
Logitech Z-640 5.1 Speakers
PNY Geforce 4 Ti 4600
Lite on 12X DVD-ROM Drive
Pacific Digital (Aopen distro pkg) 52X32X52 CD-RW Drive
HDD Primary WD Raptor 36G HDD
HDD Storage WD Caviar 1200JD 120G
All in a black Kingwin KT-436-WM
Running Windows XP SP2
-------------------------------------------------------------------

My video card is starting to show it's age in a lot of my current playing titles, and I keep hearing that Creative Labs' Audigy 2 ZS is pretty much unbeatable for consumer grade sound, especially in games.
I plan on upgrading my system completely in '08, when that .65nm process CPU mfg's keep talking about comes to the desktop (hopefully), and a few other niceties come down the pipe, to the tune of about $4000US, but I don't plan on spending a penny on it until then. So my dilemma I guess, is that I've been offered the chance to get both a GeForce 6800GT (256MB) AGP, and A Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Gamer. Mind you, I've done much research on this site (and others) regarding these parts, so, in your opinions, should I do it, or stick it out with what I've got considering all my other parts' age? I've really got no problems with most apps, it's my games that I'm having to suffer in the areas of turned on features and unnecessary CPU overhead due to the internal sound and lack of GPU power.

Thanks, and it's good to finally be a member. :)

Upgrade now, if you wait until '08, your parts will be so old it will be painful to use the computer. What I'd recomend doing is instead of spending $4000 on a computer at one time, instead spend about $1000 every year, and just upgrade the parts that are old. Its cheaper, and it will let you have almost top of the line parts all the time, instead of top of the line parts for 1 year and mid-low end parts for 3 years.

Well then, it would seem that you're of the school that says go ahead and get these parts now, that way I can just get the new CPU, maybe that other 512 stick of RAM, and be good to go for another year. Fair enough, that's a great answer, and I thank you for it! Anyone else have an opinion?
