Hole in my exhaust? Car recently making the 'fart can' noise

Just recently (past month) my car suddenly sounds like I have a crappy aftermarket exhaust. It sounds like it is coming from directly underneath my driver's seat. I don't know much technical stuff about cars, but is this a hole in the exhaust?

Is it something I should be worried about? One of my good friends has a 95 Accord, and I remember his car took on this noise back when we were still in high school, and he still has the car now (bout 2 years later). His sister also has an Accord, and older one, that also sounds the same.

So either this is an Accord issue that isn't a big deal, or I should be concerned.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

It's not an accord issue it's an old exhaust issue. Get it fixed at an exhaust shop. They will patch it up.

That's just the VTEC kickin' in yo.

Could it be a leak in the exhaust manifold? I think that was the problem an old Cherokee of mine had. It caused more loudness in the cabin than outside as I recall.

This.

Old exhausts rust through. Nothing unusual about it. I agree that the OP should get the exhaust fixed, but I also doubt that it will harm anything as it is.

If you can get under the car and locate the hole in the exhaust just cut a can, wrap it around the hole and band it up with hose clamps. Or you can just leave it as it is and be the envy of all the ricers in your neighborhood. :D

How much would you all guess the repair would cost?

This happened to my wife's accord. It was a 94 EX.

We took it to an exhaust shop that bent new pipe back to muffler. I remember it being around $100 or so.

other than leaking into the passenger compartment possibly.

If it's just a muffler about $100-200 should be the most...many shops have muffler specials...just call a midas/exhaust chain.

Actually it wasn't the muffler... nor is it in his case if it is under the passenger seat. The mufflers on this gen accord are the rear bumper area.

The piping from after the catalytic converter to the muffler had to be replaced in my wife's car. It has several holes through the piping that made it sound like a rice burner.

OP said it was driver's seat...still it's pretty hard to localize where a sound is coming from under the car while inside it.

He'd have to have it looked at. Should still be about $100-200 for a muffler and some pipe.

If there's a hole in the floor, yeah, but I'm assuming that the basic structural integrity of the car is intact and that the OP would have noticed a smell.

I'd still fix it ASAP because I hate the fart can sound (and being at college means I hear a LOT of it). Bunch of retards driving their riced out civics/accords/other crap around like racecars, dragging their shredded body kits behind them.

Floorboards are not airtight...carbon monoxide is odorless.

Because carbon monoxide is the only part of exhaust.

For all practical purposes, the floorboards are indeed airtight. If they weren't, you'd feel little breezes when driving down the highway or the carpet would get wet every time you drove in the rain. I'm sure that the grommets in the firewall cannot tolerate great pressure differentials, but for all practical purposes the area is absolutely airtight.

The amount of CO that could waft up to the cabin air intake and into the cabin of the car is so small that it doesn't just doesn't matter unless he has gaping holes in his car.

My '95 Civic has the same problem (and has for a couple years). At one point, the exhaust pipe completely split in half. Now THAT was a loud car. ;)

I have a hole in my exhaust. I even know exactly where it is, and have a new flex pipe to fix it.

But, I'm leaving it there. It makes my car sound badass lol.

All our Accords in our history have had this very problem. Let's see... 89 Accord, 90 Accord, 97 Accord x2... coincidence? Crap part. If you leave it alone it will sever at the most inopportune time - like while on the highway doing 65mph+.... twice. :( At least that 2nd time I was sort of expecting it and able to get into the right shoulder instead of the left (man that was dangerous).

Did you ever get it fixed? Approx cost?

I had (have) this problem for months now and it's driving me crazy. At 2100 RPM my Accord makes the same very noticeable 'fart can' buzzing noise. I even made a thread about it here.

I had a hole in my muffler anyway, so I had it replaced. Noise didn't go away. I ended up getting a new extension pipe, gasket and front flange seal, new exhaust brackets/hangers, new front manifold pipe - STILL had the buzzing noise at 2100 RPM. He then checked the heat shield(s), thinking they were resonating at a particular RPM. Nope, noise persisted! My mechanic (who is great) was embarrassed and dumbfounded as to what could possibly be causing the noise. He even refunded me 80% of the labor costs for the above repairs. :)

Then I found this: "Exhaust noise (1994, 1995): The gasket for the mid-exhaust pipe can stick, causing a buzzing noise. " Source.

That's about the ONLY part of my exhaust system I haven't had replaced yet. I'm hoping this will be it and I'll never have to hear this extremely annoying noise again.

I'll post if it works.

Yes a muffler shop should be able to put in a new pipe in for you. It has always been around the cat converter. I honestly don't remember how much - I would guess less than $200. Get it replaced ASAP though.
