hole drilled in UPC of Cd cases?

i was looking at some Cd's on half.com and several say "purchased with hole in upc"
"has a small drill hole in case"
"hole in UPC"

what is the deal?

I remember once when i won a cd from the radio station the cut a hole thru the case where the barcode was, im guessin so u cant return it....mabey the cds the dude is sellin were free?

Yeah, he's right. Its the promo CDs generally that a hole drilled through the UPC or through the case somewhere. My friend works for the cable company and whenever they are given promotional items sometimes she gives me the CDs or DVDs, the CDs always have holes drilled in them. (DVD's I've gotten seem to be completely fine on the other hand and I probably could've returned some for cash if I'd wanted) Anyways, the half.com people are probably people who are like Chiwawa said, radio station people or other industry folk who got their hands on promo items that are "not meant for resale."

CDs with holes in the UPC or slots cut in the spine are the music industry equivalent of "NFR" CDs. I.e. specifically for promotional use and NOT to be resold.
