do you have a set distance that beyond which you would just pretend you don't see them and let the door shut.

Today I was in a hurry and I probably came off as an ass for not holding the door open for this lady (on the larger side) holding stuff. She was pretty far (about 15-20 ft) and I just let the door shut

I like to time it so the door hits them in the face. Doesn't matter if they are 500 ft away, I'll wait til they are almost there and let the door hit them in the face.

what?! - 15-20 feet is far?

thats like only 2 cubes away. My threshold is at least 30 feet or more depending on the persons speed

edit: dudes suffer a 50% distance penalty btw

If I can see them in my peripheral vision I hold it for them. I don't turn around to check if anyone is coming, otherwise I feel obligated to hold it for them if I can see them.

Depends on several factors, but a big one to me is how fast the doors close. If the person is likely to reach the door while it's still closing then I would definitely hold it open for them no matter who they are. Other factors:

If they are old and/or handicapped I hold the door regardless.

The minimum distance goes up if they're female.

My rule of thumb is if the door would fully close if I let it go before they could get to it, then they're far enough back. In practice I'll wait longer than that because I'm not in a hurry.

It also depends how fast they are walking. If they're going slow, I'm not waiting. If they're walking at a reasonable to fast pace, then yeah I'll hold it open.

I think I wait for around 5 seconds. Mavbe 8, if I know the person. Maximum of 10, if it's a 10.

+1

2x factor for women.
2x factor for old people
2x factor for handicapped
2x factor for hot women (probably why men started letting women go first)
2x factor for otherwise encumbered person (carrying big box, etc)

I hope I never see a hot 70 year old woman in a wheel chair carrying a big box.

go through the door quickly, then hold it closed on the other side so they can't open it for about 20 seconds... then let go and run

LOL. At work if they are too far away I tell them to hurry the hell up. It's hilarious how many people will start running. hahaha

Yeah, pretty much this, though if it's a Mom with a stroller or something I will wait longer.

If I like the person, I'll hold the door. Otherwise, if they are more than a couple seconds away I let it close.

Depends I'll hold it longer for:

People that look like their hurrying
Somebody I respect
Women
Old people
People carrying stuff

Even if I'm in a hurry i still try to hold the door open for others. Unless they're walking like zombies then fuck'em.

I will hold it for up to 5 seconds... I don't know what distance that is. Longer if they're elderly.

I hate when I am 100'+ away and someone holds the door for me.
"I'm not gonna run! So... just stand there looking like a moron until I arrive."

just wave them off. that's what I do.
also, I generally look back to see who's there. If someone is 10-15' behind me, I'll hold the door open (doesn't matter who it is), unless I'm waved off

Also depends on what time of the day, if its evening and I am in a hurry to hit the road and beat the traffic, I dont give a 5uck about who you are unless you are less then 10' behind me.
