Hold'em: what are YOUR rules?

Usually my friends and I do a little $5 no limit hold'em tourney and then start over when the winner takes all. But lately it's been kinda lame since with such a low buy-in, seems the skill has been taken out of it. Since it's ONLY $5, everybody would just call till the end and hope their cards come up. You can't bluff anybody out now since they call it to the end anyway with such small buy-ins. Basically, the fun and skill has been taken out of it. I explained to my friend that it's comparable to everybody putting their money in, then we just deal all the cards out open-faced and let the big hand win.

I was thinking of raising the buy-ins. Since more money is involved, they would at least think twice before calling something.

Any other suggestions? Please share with me how you play at your poker get-togethers.

Texas Hold'em sucks.

You don't want to screw your friends over and play high stakes because they are your friends.

But if you don't play with big money it's no fun at all.

yeah $5 is good here, because u can bluff, because the money isnt really why we play its more so we can make fun of everyone else that week :).... so we take it pretty seriously

We play with quarters ($1 max/round) most of the time here at school, and we bluff the hell out of each other. Too many times I've seen people win with something like a 9-high.

But yeah, it'd probably be even better if we set it as no limit. Then again, most of us would be broke, too.

we normally (weekly) play $10 buy in with 1 $5 rebuy. pots get up to ~$150

on occasion we bring the stakes up to $65 buyin , no rebuys

we play standard casino tournament rules; all actions must be vocal

our group has a buyin between 20-50 bucks, we play blinds of .5/1 or 1/2, and we eat up any fish that try to join our game.

We usually play 3 games every monday night. First is $10 for those who are there on time/early. Then when everyone gets there we play a $20 game. Then after that, whoever stays and wants to play, there's another $10 game. I like the $20 because it forces you to play more wisely and not wild. It forces you to use skill rather than think "who cares it's only $10." Since we have around 8 people per game, pots can be $200 so people are more careful. We start with $200 in chips every game and start with 1/2 blinds. Then we raise the blinds every time someone goes out. If no one goes out in a long time, we just raise the blinds anyway.

I go to tournies that are usually in the 40-60 buy in range with some of them having rebuys and some not. But the regular game with friends is a cash game with $100 buy ins and you can buy back more chips once you are under $50 but it has to be between hands. You cant have $30 in front of you and have a great hand and buy in another 100 and go all in with that. You can only bet the 30 you have and then rebuy after the hand if you need to. Blinds are $1/2 and usually stay that way all night cuz its not a tourny.
