Firstly, 50 points to anyone who got the reference to 'The Onion'.

Secondly, I'm totally out of the hardware loop. I used to be hardcore, cutting package surfaces on my 1700+ to hard mod the multiplier to run it at 2.2Ghz+ on an ageing KG7(AMD760, wasn't supposed to go above 1.6Ghz). But times change...

I know arse-all about DDR2. There are roughly 4 speed grades or maybe more, but what does an AM2 proc take by default?

Processor choice will probably be the X2 4600 or simmilar.

AM2 like Intel 775 runs on a 266mhz FSB which means the memory default is DDR-533 (2x266), but most all also support DDR-667 & DDR-800 and some support DDR-1066

If you plan on overclocking your will want at least DDR-667 or DDR-800 memory.

Cheers.

I've swapped my CPU to an E6400 now. Here is my new parts bin:-

- Geil® Value DDR2 1GB PC4300 533MHz (4-4-4-12) with Aluminium Heat Spreader
- PixelView GF PCX7800GT SLI 256MB DDR3, PCI-E, Dual DVI, VIVO, Retail
- Intel CPU Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13GHz 1066FSB LGA775 2MB cache Retail inc.Fan (3yr Manufacturers Warranty)
- Gigabyte GA-8I965P-DS3 SKT 775 P965 Chipset PCI-E, DDR2, SATA2 GB LAN, 8ch Audio, USB2, ATX

Comes in at just under 500 bones (GBP)

You need faster memory if you are going to overclock. I suggest PC 7200

OC is a non-issue initially. Fed up with that after killing the SATA controller on my Shuttle. yeah I know it was the shuttle reliabilty that sucks, but yeah, it put me off and got in the way of me getting stuff done.

The Mobo is not SLI, the card is SLI enabled, I guess. My last card was a 6600GT and this is roughly 120% faster than that. I'm not a benchie whore any more.

some suggestions

Gigabyte DS3, Asus P5B, if u need firewire P5B-E, or Foxconn P9657AA-8EKRS2H would be my mobos of choice. Cheap, stable, lower power consumption regarding the Chipset, will allow overclocking if needed.

GPU: x1950gt, x1950pro, or wait for the upcoming midrange newcomers in March by nV & ATI like nV´s 8600Ultra or GT.

Ram: 1GB of Value DDR2-800 oder 667 memory, Corsair, Geil, Kingston, OCZ

Four slots mean I can bung another Gig in there at any time.

To be honest I'm still pissed about my shuttle dying. I laid £800 into that git and I can use sod all from it to make a new system. It's 939, single core, DDR and AGP. All I can salvage is the HDD and optical drive.

The CPU may go into a mATX rig later, but I have a 1700+ mATX pizza box rig already as a backup rig/micro server.

Great advice. I'm going for the x1950pro.

And 2Gb RAM.
