Hockey question - confusing 11 minute power play call

I just got back from the Sharks/Oilers game. I'm Canadian and have played and watched the game forever. I actually was very confused by a penalty call tonight.

Weight, the Oiler's Captain, was called for slashing (2 minutes), instigating a fight (2 minutes), fighting (5 minutes) and banging his stick (2 minutes) for an 11 minute powerplay for the Sharks. It was 11 minutes because no Shark was called for fighting. I have never seen a fighting penalty called without someone on the other team called for fighting and the instigation penalty is completely weird becase I don't know what the hell he instigated if the other player didn't get a penalty?

He got a 10 minute and game misconduct as well, but those I understand.

The Oilers scored a short-handed goal and the game eventually ended up as a tie so it really didn't change the game. I'm just really confused on the call.

Anyone have any idea what the hell the ref was thinking?

I have seen fighting penalties given to just one person many times.

To answer your other question: Of course he got the instigator penalty. He started the fight, right? The instigator penalty is given to the person who throws the first punch (well, whoever the ref thinks threw the first punch :))

Winndogg - After I watched Lafleur bury the Bruins after their too many men on the ice penalty, I feel nothing but pity for people from Boston <grin>. Of course, with the way the Habs are plaing this year, maybe you should have pity on me <grin>.

Shazam - I have probably been to hundreds of games and this was the first for me. It usually is called "roughing". Since only one "punch" was thrown (it was much more of a charge with both gloved hands used as a battering ram), there wasn't a fight so nothing could have been instigated.

ps - Windogg - where I am missing the quote from?

Oh, I was just trying to answer you're question on what the ref was thinking when he called a 11 minute penalty. It was the only logical conclusion I can come up with. :)

yeah, i was at that game too... pretty crazy! he got the instigating and fighting for droping his gloves and hitting marchment when he was on the ground (and not fighting). but.... they only put 9:00 on the clock... why? wasn't it an 11:00 minute penalty?

LUCKY! YOU WERE AT THE GAME! I WANTED TO GO!

Weight was being stupid. He slashed Marchment (2 mins) then he instigated a fight (2 mins) and then got a major for misconduct (5 mins) and also received a game misconduct (tossed out of the game) he was penalized for 39 mins total. Weight also brilliantly kept fighting with the officials over the calls and banged his stick against the glass.

Total power play: 9 minutes.

Total actual power play: started at 8mins, because Edmonton was on the power play at the time. So they skated 4 on 4 for about a minute.

This is what I'd like to believe the ref was thinking: I seriously think that the hit Marchment put on weight was NOT intentional. Weight was off in the locker room and he seriously only came back on the ice to get revenge on Marchment. He started by slashing marchment, then after the whistle blew knocked him down, started punching him, all in complete retaliation. if he stayed in, the game would have been UGLY. He wasn't looking for a clean hit... he was out for blood.

And speaking of blood, who actually saw blood drawn when Friesen was whistled for a double minor for high sticking? I saw none. Should have been only 2.

I think it was an 11 minute penalty. I'm not sure if the penalty scoreclock goes higher than 9. I thought it counted down to zero and then then they threw up another 2 minutes. It was an 8 minute powerplay because the Sharks were on a power play with 1 minute left when the penalties were called and then the Sharks got another 2 minute penalty as well.

I'm going to the game on the 3rd as well (against Calgary). My company's auditors are taking me and I get to watch the game from one of the luxory boxes. I split a Shark Pack (10 pairs, each took 5) with a friend this year and picked up extra tickets for last night's game, so that makes 7 that I'll be at for sure. I'm from Montreal, and I have tickets for when they're in town.

It's unusual to have penalties for that long. The other guy might not have gotten a penalty for fighting if he did not retaliate.

I just looked at my tickets. I'm going to the Florida game on the 6th as well. Three games in just a couple weeks :D .
