Hobbies that you like doing versus hobbies you hate in the moment but like the result

I noticed something about myself. My two biggest hobbies - fitness and home improvement projects - are things I despise doing in the moment. I don't enjoy running or weight lifting or crawling through my attic to wire a light or painting a bedroom. I do like the results though. Its nice to feel good physically and I appreciate the improvements I've made to my home. I am a tech enthusiast and I do enjoy the process of setting up technology for myself or others.

Are most of your hobbies things you like doing in the moment? Is it weird to have a hobby that you dislike in the moment but accept that brief annoyance/anger/suffering because you want results?

I only do stuff I like for a "hobby". Some of that is very hard, and physically painful, but I still enjoy it. Other stuff is work. I might be pleased when it's done, but that's mostly cause I don't have to do it anymore. Car work would be good example. I don't like doing it, and seldom do my own work, but when it's finished, and everything's good, I'm pleased the job got done. In no way do I consider it a hobby. It's a task that needed to be completed, and I completed it.

I enjoy hiking, but yeah, on the bigger hikes where I'm specifically testing my limits or pushing myself, there are certainly parts I don't enjoy. But that's maybe 10-15% of my hiking, and ideally with continued training, it will be less of an issue. With music, I don't specifically enjoy practicing but definitely wouldn't say I hate doing it, I'd just rather be playing instead of practicing.
I did used to hate running up until I started actually being in shape, now I'm more neutral on it, and only do it to get my heart rate back up when I'm going downhill.

Same on biking/lifting. Can't say I like it but no pain, no gain.

lol Type 3 fun.
For me biking is a type 1 fun. I only bike around the city on trails, no mountain biking or anything. But I like the challenge and you can push yourself as much as you want. Some days I would just ride as fast as I could because that's what I needed. Other days are casual rides to enjoy the sun/weather/views.

I wouldn't say I hate running while I am in the act of running, but for me I only run because I want to have cardiovascular fitness. Running is purely a means to an end. If the weather is nice and it's sunny and there are lots of people out then I enjoy it. Running in the dead of winter when it's freezing cold, dark, and nobody is outside is not so fun though. I have met some people that like to run because the actual act of running is fun for them.

I prefer for there to be no one around when I'm outside :D
It's great feeling like I've got a whole mountain to myself.

My wife says I don't do anything or go anywhere unless there's a point. She's the type to drive 2 hrs away to roam around and look at stuff. Nope.

She, also, refused to bike with me. :D

I have a nice mix. Video games — easy and fun (unless it’s a souls-like). Music — noodling on guitar is easy and fun, but real practice on guitar and piano is a lot like work, though it has to be done. Hiking is pure work to me but worth it.

General fitness stuff like weightlifting I no longer consider a hobby, I just do it because I have to to look and feel the way I want. I no longer work on my cars as a hobby and will just pay one of a handful of mechanics that I trust or just do it myself if it’s simple enough or too complicated to explain. I could see getting back into that when I have a house with a real garage though.

I would say I enjoy all of my hobbies. If I didn't have fun doing them I don't think I would do them.

I actually love lifting weights and enjoy it. It's a good 60-75 minutes or so where I kind of zone out and push myself, trying to one up my last visit to the gym for that muscle group.

I'd say the one that is the "most work" which I don't consider to be the fun part of it is SCUBA diving. I have all of my own gear and I take it with me whenever I travel. I have a dedicated carry on that fits everything of mine in it except my fins because they are too long. I have to put those in my checked in luggage.

It is kind of a hassle to bring all of my own stuff. Then I have to put it together before I dive, take it with me to the dive shop, bring it back and rinse it all off. Then when I get home I soak it in a tub for a while and then have to dry everything and put it away.

But to me it is all worth it. When I go diving, every single time I go, it's the same exact gear and I know it's been well maintained and I'm comfortable using it. I also know exactly how much weight I need (and even have my own weights I bring - only 2x2lb plates). Most dive operators are surprised when I tell them I don't need weights only a tank, and then they are also surprised when they see how little weight I have but it's also because my BCD has a 6lb steel plate on it.

So yeah, it would probably be more convenient for me to just rent gear when I go. I probably save like $40 bucks each time I dive because I have all my own gear. It hasn't paid for itself yet, but that wasn't necessarily the reason I got it.

I used to hate running, then I started listening to books while I ran and it made it much more enjoyable. Done a couple of marathons now, and I actually enjoy the long runs, the short runs are fine, but I wouldn't say I really enjoy them.

ditto.

photography is type 1 fun for me too - the act of snatching moments onto pixels, but the editing part is just work, but then the end result is so satisfying.

My hobbies are kinda all over the place these days, but I'd say it's mostly home improvement related. Sometimes it does feel like a chore but at same time I do enjoy thinking about what I want to do, and then just doing it, and seeing the end result. I take lot of pictures, it's fun to look back at how things started, and how it is now. I feel like projects can just drag on though, because even though I work shift work and have lot of time it's still never enough as there are other things non hobby related that still need to be done too.

My computer hobby has sorta transformed into home improvement as well in a way, as my focus is more on the server room than the actual hardware. Building materials are slightly cheaper than computer parts, and are actually in stock!

I've been meaning to get more into electronics as well but have not gotten as deep into it yet. I have a home automation project in mind that I want to start working on soon, so even electronics is going to sorta turn into home improvement in a way.

For a long time my big hobby was running my UO game server but I shut that down a few years ago to move on to other things as it was turning more into a chore and lack of players made it less worth it. I poured so much time into that over many years, it's pretty crazy when I look back, and I sometimes get the itch to relaunch it but that ship has sailed. The golden days when I had like 30+ people on the server at any given time are long gone. I sometimes toy with writing a game like UO though, the game mechanics and open world of that game were really cool. That would be a HUGE project though, especially the front end. I do have the itch to get into a new programming related project though as it's been a while since I coded anything significant. There's a few medium sized projects I have in mind that I might tackle at some point.

My off grid cabin build is going to be my next big hobby most likely as I really do want to get more done there. That's more of a summer hobby only though. The summers go by so fast and there's only so many days where I'm off and I can go though so it makes it tricky. I think this year I will focus on building a shed with a loft, even if it's not in the area I want. I wasted lot of time trying to clear land by hand last year and never got anything built. I always had to worry about rain too because all my tools would get wet, with no where to store them. So I need to focus on a shed so I can stay longer even when it does rain. I did clear a small area last year though as I was starting to consider just building a shed closer to the road, so think this year I will continue clearing that one area instead of trying to go further in. It's still far enough from the road that it won't be visible.

As far as other hobbies, I sometimes think it would be fun to learn a music instrument. Like guitar or piano or something. I find most of my hobbies have a specific purpose and are not just for fun, but sometimes it's nice to have a hobby that is 100% just for fun as that's really what a hobby should be.

I tried to run for a couple of days. My knee went on vacation one morning as I was headed to the Loo from the bedroom.

I love building computers and tinkering with electronic stuff, but there's no money in it, so it remains an expensive hobby.

My main focus right now is running. I used to race road and mountain bikes but switched to trail running and racing. I'm running 4 races this year, all of them will be epic. The training is periodized and I have had a coach for about a year now. Having a coach has helped, but I miss the less structured aspect of doing whatever I want. I listen to audiobooks and run where there very few cars with my dogs. It's tough training in the cold and snow and ice right now, but my first race will be a 110k with a lot of climbing in Croatia, and we're making a vacation around it. The reward of all of the training isn't actually crossing the finish line, it's feeling good throughout the race and bombing down the trails feeling like a kid again if only for a bit lol. The finish line and the beer after are icing on the cake.

I'm not sure I have a hobby. I do a fair bit of woodworking, but that's all for customizing my house. I do some laser engraving with the plan of turning it into a side hustle, and incorporate woodwork into that with frames and such. But I don't enjoy building, though I do enjoy having built.
Rebuilding old shop tools is fun, but it's expensive and rarely nets any return on the investment.

when my Djembe drum arrives next week, that will be one fun new hobby. I've always been into break beats - whether at clubs, all my vinyl records from dj'ing back in the day are 90% breakbeat, same with a lot of the music I listen to now. Funky beats are what move me so it's going to be fun to have a drum to play them on. I want to get so comfortable with it via practice that I can just close my eyes and let beats flow out of me.

I rarely do it, does it still count?
If you enjoy it and you aren't doing it for profit then I would call it a hobby. I remembered several hobbies I neglected to mention after reading this thread. I like board games and video games and watching sports. Those are definitely type 1 fun, unless my team is losing!

I remember a remark from a guy who was a very accomplished weightlifter, a black guy IIRC. He said he enjoyed it and if he didn't he'd stop doing it. I've thought about that remark many times. I took up gym weight training about 40 years ago, got pretty heavily into it (1.5 hours a day, 7 days a week, plus a 2 mile lap swim taking splits every 1/2 mile). I suffered a shoulder injury, eventually had surgery, but never gave up gym work, just cut back ... drastically! I'm going to the gym today, lately I'm 3x/week in the gym plus 5 mile bicycle ride each way. My walking hilly golf course in better weather could be considered a "hobby." I have never liked the word "hobby." Partly because I had no vocation as such. Of course, I love the golf. I do not dislike the gym work, though. I used to have a few sets that were tough. I don't now!

We raise sheep. The fun part is the eating of the most expensive lamb on the planet. Its also the most delicious. One of the rams broke my wife's hand. I have gotten rammed in the ankle. I spend a lot of time in the summer cutting hay for them.

I'm not sure what the money loss threshold between farming and a hobby is, but I bet we are close!
