Hobbico FlyZone Cessna 182 OR Piper J-3 Cub 4-Channel RTF

Linkage to Cessna

Linkage to Piper J-3 Cub

I have the SuperCub, almost the same as the pipe and all I can tell you is the thing is a blast, and mine is NOT a 4 channel, but a 3, so this is a SUPER deal.

Also parts for these things are silly cheap, so if you break something, you wont have to worry too much. I have really beat mine up, especially on the landings, and its still going strong on the stock parts, and Ive crash landed well over 20 times so far.

But if your looking to start flying, to test this hobby out, here is a good chance to do so on the super cheap!

Here is a video of me doing stunts and flying with my cheap $23 dealextreme Spy Pen Camera Attached to it with Duct Tape.

And in each link there are more pictures and video links to each plane to check out.

If you got the space, or know of some space to fly, get it, its fun. Its slow, it can glide if you take up high enough, and once you get used to it, it becomes a very relaxing hobby as I am hooked. I been doing cheap $20 planes for years, this was my first "real" one, and wish I got one sooner.

Anyway,
ENJOY!

Id say the piper as it lands tail dragging which will be a little less giving when landing then trying to land on 3 wheels every single time. Especially if landing in tall grass. BUT thants my opinion, and what mine is. I want the Cessna but to land it in my back yard it will flip on landing in my tall grass, so if I got it Id have to take it to the park to fly it.

Which is easier/better plane to fly for a begginer the piper you linked or this
http://www.hobbyzone.com/rc_pl..._8nc3ZoCFQzxDAoduhIV0A

the supercub wingspan is at least 10 inches wider I dont know if that translates to better flight in windy conditions. The supercub also has the anti crash technology.

It gets really windy here in rural minnesota so better flight control in light to windy condition is preferred.

Thanks for input

These two planes are really not even in the same league as the Supercub. It's a much nicer plane. If I were just starting I would go with a Multiplex easystar or gws slowstick. If you're on a really tight budget and need a completely rtf look at the Wild Hawk. It's a pretty decent plane and can be upgraded later. For wind I'd stick with the EasyStar or Wild Hawk.

As for wind, either is going to suck in it. Because I havent had my hands on the ones in the OP, just a larger version, which would be the Piper, I do have plans of getting the Cessna myself very soon, I think either will do just fine, the larger wingspan, and beings it slower may prove to be a bit worse in very windy conditions, and none of these types of planes are meant for winds in excess of 10 mph anyway or you will just watch them float away on you, if you went with the supercub as your first. Unless I may have it backwards and the smaller wingspan would be worse in a more windy situation, but Im thinking that plane has the same powerplant as I have, same battery power, lighter, and more controls, so I can think using logic it would be the better choice in more wind vs mine.

I just cant wait to get my Cessna, I just have to wait for my wife to come back from her family reunion, and if she got any cash left, said I can get it 🙂🙂🙂 Thats the plane I was starting to take my fly lessons on till my mother and father got sick with Cancer and had to quit taking classes. So I saw that, and its got a huge place in my heart, and I really like to get it for many reasons other then just to fly it.

You can do more with the supercub, IE drop bombs, a parachute guy, but its not as advanced as the ones I linked to nor does it have the better controller. As far as the ACT technology, IT SUCKS, I cannot fly my plane with it on for no matter what I do, or if I decide to brave 10+ mph winds it makes my plane fly like rap, so since day one, thats been shut off.

As far as the plane above me has been linked by arkcom, I bought one of them, kinda like that, but much bigger wing span, oh about 8 years ago, and I couldnt fly it to save my life. Its a nice price, its tempting, but for some reason after using the sims all my life, then trying one, I crashed it on every take off, and every landing, and never got a good flight, and took 8 years, and the hobby store owner I know to talk me into the plane I got, saying his 5 year old could fly it, and talking into between what I had and this, as being a totally different class of plane, and IM glad he did. Again this is my opinion and experience, for once I get my supercub off the ground, I can do pretty much anything with it as I do on my simulators, which includes all the crash landings. But almost all the stunts I pull off on the sims, as long as I stay high enough, Im doing in real life, and there is nothing like it 😉

But Im done writing, Ive got a calm day, I got a room to clean, 2 batteries to charge now, hopefully my two upgrades will be here today and can charge them, and I plan on getting 4 flights in today and shooting 4 videos. Which BTW I post all up on youtube, and in the off topic section if you guys every care to want to see what I shoot with that cheap ass $23 spy pen camera I listed while back😉

Sad day today for Jay. Decided to go out today with my plane and camera for there was no wind, and my new batteries showed up to give me more power and longer run times. First light went great, did some stalls, son was next to me, we were having a blast watching it, and had the camera on it of course so I knew I was getting some great footage. Well decided to drain the 2 oem batteries first, and on the 2nd pack, bringing it in for a landing, a HUGE gust of wind out of no where just as it was about to land took my plane and stuck it in the very top of my tree. My son tried to climb it but got scared, I did something stupid which was try and climb it myself in my fucked up condition and almost fell when a brach broke under me, that almost landed on my son down below, almost knocking me out of the tree, making me worse then I am, but I got lucky and held tight to the other limb, and slowly got out, saying, "well I did it, climbed my last tree, scratch that of the list".

We tried to shoot it down with my soft pellet gun, then tried my bb gun, then as a last ditch effort attached a rope to the limb and my van to rock the limb in hopes it may shake the plane out of the tree, but all I did was get my van stuck and left some nice tracks in my yard.

Needless to say, my plane, and camera is a write off unless by some chance of fate it should fall out on its own, but its in there pretty deep. And the camera is still going, which according to the site it will record for 2 hours straight, so it should be interesting what all it should look like if it ever comes down and still works.

Damn fucking wind, and I never even got the chance to put my new batteries in it yet 🙁🙁🙁

OH well, I'll just have to get a new one, and what sucks more is my wife is really thinking of getting me the Cessna, which was cool for Id have two planes, but that one doesnt take these batteries, so when/if it comes down, Id have to buy the same plane again 😛

Damn wind!!!!!

And of course it mocked me the whole time I was trying to get it out of the tree, with NO wind blowing at all again! If Mother Nature would show up at my door right now, Id bitch slap her so hard, we'd go right from summer directly into winter.

OH and to find out too, the tree had poison ivy around it, and I was in my slippers, so I get to find out later i I will have a reaction to it or not. My oldest is not going to , hes not effected by the stuff, and this is my first time in it, so this day just sucked hard for me.

thats my biggest fear of getting one of these - trees. can you throw stuff at it, like sticks and stuff that would have more weight than a bb?

I had that cub. Great little plane. The only downside, is it could really use a brushless motor. It does not have much extra power to spare, and you have to do a power on landing, because it sinks like a rock when you kill the motor. I like flying my Ucan Do, but I would get the cub out for a little fun. I love getting it out when the wind is kicking up close to 20mph, and when you fly into the wind, you can walk fast than the plane is going. It makes for fun horizontal hovering. I don't think I would buy it as a beginners plane. I like a trusty Avistar for that. I think the price on my cub was only about 79.00 five years ago when I bought it. Things have really gone up.

I agree.

I've never owned a plane and I have a huge filed at work I've always wanted to fly one in.

Just hate to spend $ and crash because I have no idea how to fly.

Would you be able to get it down by standing on your van and using a 20 foot long golf ball retriever or something?

Damn yo you da man! Thats exactly what I need, and I need the $40 to buy it!

Time to see what I can sell. Its up about 20 or so feet, but if I can just get close to the branhes under it, or should say my son, we can get it out of there before it gets ruined, and can keep that pole should this ever happen again, WHICH IT WONT, for Im never bringing my plane in that way again from that location and give mother nature the chance to screw me again!

But yes, that would be the very thing I even dreamed of last night, how freaky this is! 😛

And as I been saying guys, its not the flying that you have to worry about as long as you get it high in the air to practice on a calm fay, it will go VERY high, if you think my videos it looks high, thats nothing, Ive had it yesterday a tiny little speck, and couldnt wait to see what I got as far as a fiew from that flight, for ir was waaaaaaaaaay up there, and at that height you can pretty much do anything and get away with it. ITS the LANDING your screwed at when new, and even at my case whos not new, that screws you. I still get the gitters, I shake, get nervous, forget which way is what on the controls, and god forbid my son or my friend is next to me and asks me a question while landing, Im super extra screwed then.

But parts for this plane in the op are cheap, just scroll down from the main body as they have them listed, so even i you do mess it up, this is the perfect first plane, AND THE MAIN reason as to why I posted this up, for it was not just the price, but for those like me who wanted to take the plunge, but if it crashed wasnt out a few hundred. It is suprisingling simple to fly, and get off the ground, just got to work on the landings, and yet, if your coming in slow, like you should be, you wont break it, tweak the wing and its rubber bands holding it on if you get the piper, so you have to readjust its wing, and you good to go all over again.

All I know for sure though, is if one of you gets it, thats been waiting as I have, your next reply is going to be how your hooked, and the laundry list of new planes you want, for I got me a list all ready, I am more hooked now on planes then I am on cars and trucks and I been doing that hobby for close to 30 years. I cant get enough fly time, and it is literally killing me to know my plane is in that damn tree behind me, and atm I cant to a thing to get it back, and top it off, last nigh it rained 🙁

There is no wind again today, and all I want to do is get my lawn chair, my soda, my son, and chill for a hour or so forgetting all my shit, and watch my plane, then come in and watch what it got while up in the air, for it soooooo relaxes me, and you guys have no idea as to how much it means to me for I been in a dark place the last few months, and this was my way out of it for a bit.

Anyway, yoyo, thanks, Im on that, just need to figure a way, but I will, I always do 🙂 Its just funny as how I did honestly dream that pole last night, and you happen to go link it. Thats freaky.

HA! yoyo, you gave me Idea, I called local lumber yard down the street, going to go get 1/2 pvc pipe, a 10, and 20 foot, and coupler section, and will use it, to push my plane out of the tree 🙂

Again, cannot thank you enough for the idea, and HOPEFULLY, its not tooo damaged, I can have fun again today.

Thanks for response

Does anyone know which is definitively better in windy condition the supercub (longer wing) or the Piper liked by the OP?

I tried a similar plane to the Wildhawk, Firebird XL from hot deals here a few years back and my first flight was like this ok until the 2 min when the wind just took it over some trees out of my line sight, I let go of the power and it must glided half a mile away, was able to track it down using the engine sound thru the forest. 2nd flight agian wind took it on top of some trees. I decided it was just to windy here in my area.

I have been into Helicopter for the past 2 years first the blade cx2 and now the Belt CP, I just had my firts bad crash with the belt cp and know waiting for parts. I always wanted to start up on planes and wanted something with that was at least flyable in 10-15 mph winds (ave here in rural minnesota)

For helicopters the bigger the rotor, the heavier the plane the more stablilty in windy cnditions. No sure if it goes the same with these foamy planes.

Thanks

I am also thinking of getting the Supercub LP (lipo) since I have 3 extra 3 cell lipo batteries from my helicopter, will just need to get a plug adapter.

Thats what I had, the firebird XL, I couldnt fly that thing to save my life if I had to.

My plane is pretty light, so I was going on the lighter the plane, the larger the wing, the more air it will catch, and be more a pita in the wind, Its my theory, and could be wrong, but its how I would see it. These are smaller, more controllable, same powered, or better for my motor has to go though a transmission, less wing to catch the wind, so I have to say these guys, especially the Piper, would be better then mine, for the pipers wings are held with rubber bands like mine, so if you crash, you just have to re adjust the wing back in place. The Cessna, the wing is screwed into place, so should you have a bad crash, your forced into a new wing, no rubber bands to readjust the wing. And trust me, having the rubber bands in a crash has saved my ass a ton of money just needing to adjust my main wing after crash landing, one after another.

ALSO with mine because it is a 3ch radio, should you go brushless, you need to change everything, INCLUDING the radio to a 4 ch I found out yesterday, for there is a guy on ebay selling the mount, motor, and esc, and I confirmed it with my hobby shop, my super cub has all o it built into one unit, esc, receiver, so if you go brushless you are forced to change also the radio. The ones I listed already have the mount, and a 4ch radio, so pretty much brushless ready.

Just more food for thought, and as to why I plan to get one of these myself too, for to switch mine to brushless means it will cost me as much as the plane did new.

"super cub has all o it built into one unit, esc, receiver"

this is good information, its not a very upgradeable plane, although the only thing you would like to change anyway is the Motor (brushless). I dont think you need to change the esc to use a LIPO battery.

I do have at least 2 6 channel transmitters (from Helicopters) that I can use so maybe I should just look into a ARF

Thanks will look into the Piper.

I got my plane down using 30 feet of pvc pipe! Thanks to Yoyos link it gave me the idea and it worked. Im dead now, hurting like a sob, but its down, the camera is down, and I just need a new wing, WHICH, I bought when I did Father son day with my youngest and we went to Jackson to pick him up some Hermit crabs and go out for lunch, so I will be up and running again in a few hours!
YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

HA, though it got rained on big time, my camera still works! Loading up the video to see what all it caught at the last minute when it crashed 🙂
