I am so tired of hoax emails that decieve people into thinking thats something bad is happening or they need to forward some email to save a life. I'm not talking about email scams like Dr. whosiwhatsit from Nigeria who wants to transfer you millions of dollars. Not even the ones that say you'll die a fiery death if you dont forward the email. I mean the ones that say something to he effect of such and such poor little girl is gonna die if you don't forward this email, etc. For example, I got this old email again:
This poem was written by a terminally
ill young girl in a New York Hospital.
It was sent by a medical doctor -
Make sure to read what is in the closing
statement AFTER THE POEM.
SLOW DANCE
Have you ever watched kids
On a merry-go-round?
Or listened to the rain
Slapping on the ground?
Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight?
Or gazed at the sun into the fading night?
You better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.
Do you run through each day
On the fly?
When you ask How are you?
Do you hear the reply?
When the day is done
Do you lie in your bed
With the next hundred chores
Running through your head?
You'd better slow down
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.
Ever told your child,
We'll do it tomorrow?
And in your haste,
Not see his sorrow?
Ever lost touch,
Let a good friendship die
Cause you never had time
To call and say,"hi"
You'd better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.
When you run so fast to get somewhere
You miss half the fun of getting there.
When you worry and hurry through your day,
It is like an unopened gift....
Thrown away.
Life is not a race.
Do take it slower
Hear the music
Before the song is over.
PLEASE FORWARD THIS TO HELP THIS LITTLE GIRL.

Dear All:
PLEASE pass this mail on to everybody you know. It is the request of a
special little girl who will soon leave this world as she has cancer. Please
send this to everyone you know or don't know. This little girl has 6 months
left to live, and as her dying wish, She wanted to send a letter telling
everyone to live their life to the fullest, since she never will. She'll
never make it to prom, graduate from high school, or get married and have a
family of her own. By you sending this to as many people as possible, you
can give her and her family a little hope, because with every name that this
is sent to, The American Cancer Society will donate 3 cents per name to her
treatment and recovery plan. One guy sent this to 500 people! So I know that
we can send it to at least 5 or 6. Just think it could be you one day. It's
not even your money, just your time! PLEASE PASS ON AS A LAST REQUEST Dr.

I mean COME ON! It was written in 1997 by Jessica Mydekt. She's not a little girl and she's not terminally ill with cancer. This email has circulated so much that the American cancer society issued a statement a while back due to this chain email.
But I question the common sense of people who continue to forward this nonsense. I can understand that they may not understand that email counts cannot be tracked in this fashion, and yes its a very emotionally gutwrenching scenario, stop for a minute and look at what you are reading. Do you really believe SPAMing all your friends is going to save this little girl?
I find these sorts of emails so much more offensive then the typical "make me money" or unsolicited pron emails. Why? Because these emails decieve people to play with their emotions by faking a very real and tragic situation. To make it worse some types of these emails have the absolute worst timing. A few years ago in the events of the 9/11 disaster, alot of these stupid chain emails were going around about Nostredamus predicting the end of the world. In the midst of a very stressfull time for everyone, people got really shaken and upset by the emails. Well when I recieved them from various people, I kinda flipped out and shot down the emails disproving them. I was really upset that people could send me "end of the world" messages while I was covered in the ash and smoke of the burning World Trade Center. A few people even got upset that I denouced those emails...
I urge anyone that sends these chain letters out to please think about forwarding something to your friends and family that may upset them, especially when it's pretty obviously a hoax.
If you want to really help a sick little girl or boy, why not do something that really does help. When you recieve these emails why not send something more constructive. For instance here is a link to Locks of Love. Saturday I am cutting off my very long hair (18") and donating it Locks of Love who use the hair to make real hair wigs for kids with cancer and other diseases that result in the loss of their hair. It really helps bolster the confidence of these children who already have so much hardships to deal with, without needed the added redicule of other kids who may tease them for being bald. I also make donations whenever I can to the Starlight Foundation and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. I will never forget how happy the Make-A-Wish Foundation made my childhood friend who had terminal cancer. He wanted a video camera back in the days where VHS video cameras were pretty new and cost well into $3000-4000. He was the son of a single mother who couldn't afford one. The Make-A-Wish Foundation bought him a video camera. He made home videos almost every day for the 2 years he had the camera until cancer finally took his life at 14 years old. It brought alot of joy to his last few years and left his family and friends with great home videos to keep forever. Therefore I always try to donate to the foundation in his honor.
I'm not trying to tell people what to do or how to think, just trying to point out what I feel is infinitely more constructive in trying to help someone, rather then forward some stupid hoax emails. Maybe I'm missing the point here I don't know, but all these emotional request chain letters seem to do is spread ignorance and cause grief. I'm not angry at people who send forward them, they do it out of empathy and the kindness of their heart, I just wish they'd open their eyes a bit though before pushing the send button.
