HOA Bans Just About Everything Fun A Kid Might Do Outside

http://consumerist.com/2013/03/18/hoa-bans-just-about-everything-fun-a-kid-might-do-outside/

According to WPTV, residents received a letter last week alerting them to a change in policy that banned just about anything with wheels — skateboards, roller blades, bicycles, scooters — along with toys and ball-playing, from the complex’s roadways, walkways or common grounds.

The HOA president stands behind her door and yells at the camera, “There is no comment! Don’t you understand?”

Yep; HOA is looking out for you, pay your dues and get off my lawn. :whiste:

This is what happens when you trade freedom for other things. Same thing is happening with our government, so why would anyone be surprised?

Why anyone would choose to live in an HOA community is beyond me...

It only took the 2nd reply!

Anyway, the kids should all just band together and go run around and play tag or something in the street in front of the HOA president's house. And they should do so very loudly.

HOAs have their place. Either they are too weak to do anything, or they are so in your face... Bottom line is, you knew there was an HOA before you bought the house... You can get involved on the HOA's board to ensure they don't go full NAZI on the neighborhood.

I live in a neighborhood with a "Voluntary HOA"... Only half the houses pay the dues...and the HOA has no teeth to address eye sore houses. I liked the fact that it was voluntary as I was always against HOA's...

I now see their value, but my next house is going to be HOA free because I've seen the other side of a bad HOA... The HOA that is powerless.

Why? Because for $200/month I get water, trash, recycling and yard maintenance all taken care of. Not all HOA's are created equal though and part of the buying process should be to check out the HOA and make sure it's something you can work with. Shit like the OP is ridiculous and anyone with a right mind would realize the absurdity of it, but that's far from the norm.

Define "eye sore"? Like you don't like the color they choose or a hugh hole in the roof?

The City, County, Health board, etc... do everything most Pro-HOA people bring up. I have no HOA but sent a single e-mail to the county that made my neighbor take care of a broken down car on the side of his house. Mind you I asked him about it and over a year later did nothing, unlike many HOA people that don't talk to their neighbors they just change the rules or come up with BS.

I doubt this is legal.

I believe it is, it's a contractual agreement for living there. That's not to say that if the people wanted to they couldn't fight to get it changed, but my guess is since it even went into affect, there's a lot of old people without kids living there.

Next up. Anyone with children BANNED!

Actually there are HOA's in FL that have rules no one under X years of age is allowed.
It was a while back but some grandparents had to take their grandkid in. They got caught and were in the process of being kicked out.

nm, just read the article. So 'anything with wheels' does not include cars. Strange double-standard there, given that its the cars that create the danger in the first place.
