I'm speechless.....

"This driver runs regardless of whether the game runs; keeping an eye out for any suspicious activity such as attempting to copy a protected disc. If something suspicious is detected, it forces the PC to make an immediate reboot, regardless of any other applications running and whether or not the user has any unsaved work."

It just goes to show, some game publishers don't want you to actually buy their game. Piraters actually have an EASIER time running the software safely without screwing up their system instead of PAYING customers.

Bottom line: Pirate any game that uses Starforce. They will get the picture.

i somehow doubt pirating their game is the correct answer. maybe not play their game at all.

anyway, if a game comes with starforce, is it clearly marked on the case? haven't played pc games in awhile.

Why not? Any game that uses Starforce puts in big bold letters "Please pirate this game if you wish to play it, because only pirates will get to enjoy the game on a stable computer." That's what I read when I see Starforce.

The options are clearly don't play it at all, or pirate it. You can't buy it, because that ruins your computer. The developers are rarely if never in charge of what copy protection goes into their hardly worked on game - that's usually left to the greedy publisher. Well screw that, those developers worked hard, and if their game is good I'll play it the only way possible. They still get money.

I doubt that the person who is writing it likes the situation any more than you do. It's just that they are paying them enough so that they will do it anyways.

in that case the money would still go to the publisher, so they'd have no economic incentive to not use starforce.

But it could be an effective solution for those who want to see the game studio actually earn some money for their hard work, but also don't want their system infected with draconian DRM systems.

It might vary publisher to publisher, but I believe the developers get paid no matter how many games get sold. The only ones profitting from sales would be the publisher.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

they're shooting themselves in the foot here. this is so dumb. starforce already made so many legal copy owning or paying customers not able to run the original game on their PCs... if things continue this way, PC gamer will lose more ground to the likes of 360 PS3 and Rev.

Buy it 2nd hand. That way the publisher doesn't get money again and you can still claim the high moral ground when you circumvent the DRM.

They're making it worse for the legit user who wants to back up his game. Pirates can just download the image off bittorrent, disconnect the CDROM drive, mount the image and play without any issues (or so I was told).

I purchased FIA GTR racing (starforce game) and simply could not get it to work on my PC. I learned my lesson.

all the more reason to disable it on startup. I'll be sure to check it out some day, I bet it uses a standard windows routine to cause the restart; thus, it can be blocked. I've never had a restart though and I nef with my comp about as much as possible.

I used a tool to remove it after a reboot but as soon as you launch a game it reinstalls itself and makes you reboot again. Users should not have to reboot their system after playing a damn game!

IMHO it seems to be like the other DRM systems. For example itunes mp3's with restrictive rights vs free downloads with no DRM at all. It ends up screwing the legit users and has no impact on pirates. These companies are hurting the people that actually pay for their stuff!

that is true. and dt4 is a free app. once you get your hands on the ISO, you will have a much easier time getting the title to work than a physical CD with an optical drive.

most UBIsoft games are notorious for their starforce implementation and no one was able to circumvent it except for the IDE trick, because i know king kong and prince of persia 3 works by disconnecting the optical drives and using DT4.
