The consenus seems to be "You'll need it in 2009, when any card bought in the near future will likely be to slow to the games that use it."

It was like the 6800 series. They were Direct X 9.0c ready than the ATI cards

but it took a while to mature

Exactly. By the time the games are fully utilizing DX10 the first gen cards will not be able to run it worth a damn anyway. So waiting to buy a card for just that reason does not make sense to me (anynmore).
