Hi ,

Im new to SuSe Linux and was wondering how i install new updated Drivers .

I have downloaded the latest nVidia Graphix Card Drivers , but im a little stuck on what to do next ?😕

I have SuSe 8.1

First asking how to install Linux....now asking to update drivers. People would gladly help you if you at least try to help yourself.

My advice would be read up before you get in over your head.

I HAVE READ UP

"
II. SuSE Linux 8.2
SuSE Linux Desktop (SLD)
----------------------------

1) Kernel sources must be installed and configured. Usually this means
installing the 'kernel-source' package with YaST2, update it - if not
already done - via YaST2 Online Update (YOU) and configure it then
with the following commands:

cd /usr/src/linux
make cloneconfig && make dep

2) Use the nvidia installer for 1.0-6106.

sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6106-pkg1.run

3) Configure XFree86 with

sax2 -m 0=nvidia (0 is a digit, not a letter!)

NOTE: There is no need to try to enable 3D support. It's already
enabled, when the nvidia driver is running. Ignore the
misleading error message, that 3D support can't be enabled.
This problem will be fixed with SuSE > 9.0 and is related to the
latest nvidia driver release.

I didnt understand it completely , if youve nothing constructive to say then dont post at all please .
Ive updated YaST2 , but i cant get the file to do anything .

Anyway , isnt that what forums on Operating Systems are for ... support and help ???

Well if you don't understand it, tell us what you dont understand. You can't expect us to walk everyone through everything holding their hand.

This is a forum for helping people figure out their problems as well broadening people's knowledge.

I have downloaded the latest nVidia Graphix Card Drivers , but im a little stuck on what to do next ?

The next step is to read how to install it.

If you don't understand a particular step, or are confused about what some of the commands mean then ask here. But don't come here asking people to hold your hand to install something as simple as NVidia drivers.

Have you installed the kernel-source with yast2? If you have then everything should work just fine.

but i cant get the file to do anything .
What file? You have be more descriptive, I can't read your mind.

No one asked anyone to hold there hand , thats just childish talk .

All i wanted to know , was a brief discription on how to install my FIRST driver in Linux ,
so i can get one with updating any other drivers that needs updating .

If you could'nt do that , or could'nt be bothered doing that then you should have moved on Like
any other person DOES.

You missed my point. You asked us to help you do something that can be done by RTFM. If you are confused about parts about the installation, you can ask them here and people will gladly try and help you.

You are starting to post a little more details about what you dont understand, and I am trying to help, but it's hard when you dont give us much to work with.

By the way

se when updating YaST2 is it better to "Manually" pick the patches or Reload all from server ?

I would guess depending on your internet connection you could do either or. If you have broadband I dont see any reason to not Reload from server other then wasting bandwidth, but if you only need to update one package I would just manually pick the one you need.

Forget it . I could have it done by now , if i wasent talking in here .

Look, im trying to help you here, but you are not being very cooperative.

If you would answer my questions this could get solved.

What part of the installation don't you understand?
What error messages are you getting?

I wrote a how-to on this, and the nVidia documentation is quite good. If you are having issues, themore information you can give us the better.

First things first

I have 2 Network connectionsavailable to me :-

eth0
eth1

Ok eth0 is my onboard nForce2 NIC ,and no matter what settongs i put in it wont work ?
Ive even done the thing in the BIOS "changing the MAC address" to 000661 ( EPoX 8RDA+ )
but the Connection wont work.

So i installed eth1 thats an OvisLink NIC and i typed in the exact same settings as the nForce2 NIC
and the eth1 worked BUT everytime i restart the PC i have to go to YaST2 AND configure it because when
starting up it say eth0 - Failed!
eth1 - Failed!

Should the YaST2 settings not save ?

I use a Cable Broadband Router

But anyway thats why im wanting the new drivers for the nVidia nForce2 Chipset and GeForce Card.

Are you trying to get your NVidia lan to work? If so, I wouldn't worry about the yast2 issue until the lan is working.

One thing you can do is uninstall drivers for the Nvidia LAN so that it doesn't get it's own eth# device. Then your other nic card would become eth0 and everything should work as it should work. But if you want to use the Nvidia LAN then you should follow the directions for installing the new drivers for it, even if that means rebooting several times and having to fix the network config again.

Yeah im going to try and get the nVidia LAN working , i need the PCI slot and the PCI LAN is very old .

I just seen something in the kernal updates i was doing , a nVidia graphics driver so mabye that'll sort out the Graphics card.

Thanks for the help , im going to go and get the rest of the updates in and try and get this LAN working

The Nvidia lan uses a modified Realtech chipset. It's the cheapest setup you can possibly find anywere, and I've have bought realtech-based nic cards under a veriaty of brand names for 2 for 8 bucks type deals.

Not great, but they work and have good Linux support.

However Nvidia has modified them slightly so that they do not work with normal drivers PLUS they absolutely refuse to support Linux developers in getting this nic card supported properly. Instead of that they have propriatory type drivers aviable from their website that are a pain to work with. Like they have something to hide.

Then on top of that, since they are so similar to the generic cards they are often misdetected as the real deal by the installers. So often they act like they are working since the kernel module (the driver) can detect and load up without error. But they don't work. So it screws everything up.

Nvidia is using one of the most generic and cheaply made nic chipsets in existance, yet they refuse to help out because of crap like trying to protect trade secrets. (Sounds more like a corporate culture with it's head up it butt to me)

So what you need to do is go to nvidia.com and download their IA32 drivers for the nforce chipsets. Don't worry if your using the nforce2 boards, they are pretty much the same thing and the package works for all of them. (unless Suse has nforce drivers aviable from packages, too)

Sorry you have to deal with crap like this. Next time buy a VIA motherboard, they are generally much more Linux freindly, and you wouldn't have to go thru crap like this with your nic cards and whatnot.

Hopefully after you get the drivers installed, you can remove your nforce nic running whatever module and configure them using Yast2 using the nforce drivers.

Should also get your AGP port going too.

In regards with the nic that you want to get it started up you can try a utility like netcard-config or netcfg . Im not too familiar with suse , but if that doesnt help there should be a file in /etc/rc.d like rc.inet1 or rc.inet2 . Just browse through those files and look for eth0 and eth1 in those files , that links the eth0 or eth1 adapter to dhclient or static config .
