Hmmmm... 1GB 4850s surfacing

Yeah, it's the initial price gouging Newegg's famous for. You can find deals on 512MB 4870's for this price! I'll take the GPU horsepower over additional VRAM any day.

Price is high now, but it will drop quite a bit after the 1GB 4870 hits the shelves. That's what I'm waiting for.

It's also the exact same stock 4850 cooler under the fancy new shroud to boot, according to FUD. I would wait a bit to see what else crops up - I've seen some engineering samples with Zalman coolers.

Single-slot solutions are handy; not everyone needs a high-horsepower monster GPU. But as hot as today's cards run (i.e. the 4850/70) you would think AMD would just stick to dual-slot designs. Even a half-ass dual-slot card dumps more than half it's heat outside the case.

Personally, I can't wait to have a dual-slot card again. My 8800GT dumps all of it's considerable heat inside the case. 🙁

did the newer 4000 series cards have some sort of temp control or fan fix built in to make it idle at a more reasonable temp?

That's a very good question; and one I'm sure all the "non-super-early-adopters" (like me) want to know!

Yeah it's been on newegg for a couple days now. If you find any review be sure to post a thread I'm curious to see if there's any difference. I doubt it though. 4870 should be different story with the extra bandwidth. Anyway games with bigger texture packs should also use that extra memory.
