You're the one with the f*cked-up spyware infested computer - don't blame AT because you suck at t3h int4rw3bz.

I keep my computer pretty clean.

I have spybot, microsoft antispyware, and symantec run checks and clean every night...I have never gotten a spyware or virus on this PC yet...

I also have tea timer enabled..which prevents changes to the OS...

I block all 3rd party cookies and prompt 1st party cookies...

don't come in here and just attack me, because you have no idea what I'm running. :|

Settle down, Beavis. You're the one that came here being all hostile toward Anandtech.

Tea timer intercepts certain registry and bho changes, not the entire OS.

The behavior you're describing is malware behavior...its ignorant to think that an AT forum is a culprit.

Btw, you may want to post a hijackthis log.

That's not ignorant, it's unlikely. Ignorant would be assuming it couldn't come from AT. 😉

OP, you likely got spyware from another site and it downloaded something while you were browsing AT that set off the error. Spyware often downloads and installs other spyware.

Posting the hijack this log will help.

Also, run some spyware scans in safe mode, I'm betting you'll find something. With spyware, it's best to use multiple scanners.

edit: err, run the scans then generate the log so there's less for use to sift through.

I hope I don't sound too stupid. What is a Hijackthis log?

if you think with all the ads that anandtech links to other vendors will never contain spyware...then you are the ignorant one.

buy hey, I'm not here to be hostile, I just posted the question to see if other people encountered the same thing. but everyone wants to jump down my throat because they love ATOT..well I love it too, but I would like to see if a 3rd party ad vendor may be trying to slip someting pass anandtech..that's all. stop being so sensitive everyone! 🙂

to answer the other guy, no, I came into ATOT 1st hand and have not browsed to any other sites after the computer boot up.

which means:

1. computer was scanned and cleaned by spybot, microsoft anti-spyware, and symantec AV corporate edition the night before.

2. computer was shutdown when I went to work the next morning.

3. booted up computer, opened ATOT and posted a little bit, boom, got suspicious message.

does this mean there no way I may have virus/spyware, no. but I will scan my comp again when I get home in safe mode with all 3 scanning apps and see if I find anything. If not, I think anandtech should check all their ads and see if any of their 3rd party vendors are trying to do something fishy...

Have you clicked on any ads linked from anandtech? It' very unlikely you got something by just opening the page.

It's good to see that you don't exclude the unlikely. That's a huge mistake. 😉

Spyware is getting crafty. Sometimes you don't notice it for a LONG time. Gone are the days of simple spyware letting you know it's installed by generating a pop-up. I mean they are still around, but it's not where things are going. They are content to simply spy on you and realize that it's more effective to spy w/o letting the user know somethings up (pop-ups, redirectors, hijacked homepage/search, etc.).

If you really want to have anandtech look at something, you're going to need better evidence than what you're demonstrating. I can think of only about a million ways something happened with just anandtech open, and anandtech isn't responsible. Doesn't mean they aren't, it could be something loaded here, again, just less likely compared to the rest of the internet. Good luck.

You are being hostile whey you're accusing AT Off Topic forum of removing spybot, and using one of these: ":|" You could have well simply asked others if they had a similar problem...which of course you'd get noone saying they did...but atleast you'd be more open minded about what's going on, being more constructive.

You probably don't have a firewall that controls apps either, so you probably don't know exactly which program was executing the behavior, even tho it happened while on AT.

Yes, you did come in here making assumptions and being hostile. You didn't ask if it was *possible* that Anandtech's forums/ads were responsible, you asked why they DID IT. Is it *possible*, sure, anything is possible, but it's not the likeliest explanation. Why not post your firewall logs to see if you can trace it?

my limited hardware firewall will only log maybe the last 10 minutes of activity before it recycles the data....

also, I apologize if I came across as hostile at the beginning, I guess it was a mis-interpreted :| .... because there are different levels of :| and ATOT just didn't understand which level I was in 🙂
