The only hybrid I'd get is the Accord Hybrid = excellent power and decent economy (something like 35 on the highway).

other than that, the prius is a nice car.

edit-- the mazda6 we just got gets around 33-35mpg on the highway - it was under 20k, and is extremely nice. Just thought i'd throw that in. :)

You do get a tax break in the States for hybrid vehicles.

some states (Va and Ca) will also let you drive in the HOV lanes with a hybrid... however i've heard they're going to do away with that in 2006.

Aphex - did the dealers you talk to mention how long the wait list was to get one?

No waitlist, this dealer (whom i wouldn't purchase it through had 2 in stock), and pretty much every other dealer around me here had at least 1 if not 2.

I don't know where you live, but diesel should NEVER cost $.50 more than gas. Indeed, diesel SHOULD cost half as much as gas...it's artificially high.

I think it looks retarded. Like it was the car that rode the short bus (or car-carrier, as it were)....same goes for the Honda Insight. I never understood why they decided that since the cars had this uber-tech hybrid feature, they had to make the cars look extra "space-age".....lame

If you're looking for hybrids then go honda civic or accord, atleast they look good and you kow they're a fairly proven model of car.

Good site to get info on the tax breaks: http://www.hybridcars.com/incentives.html

Freebee, you could be looking at $3000 exempt:

"New York New York's Alternative Fuel (Clean Fuel) Vehicle Tax Incentive Program offers tax credits and a tax exemption for purchasing new hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs), and/or install clean fuel vehicle refueling equipment. Purchasers of qualified HEVs are eligible for a tax credit of up to $3,000, depending on the vehicle's fuel economy. To qualify, a vehicle must draw propulsion energy from both an internal combustion engine (or heat engine that uses combustible fuel) and an energy storage device; and must employ a regenerative braking system that recovers waste energy to charge that device, and, for model year 2004 and later, must meet or exceed the California LEV II emission standard. Current production models such as the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight qualify. The maximum value of the incentive is $5,000 for vehicles weighing less than 14,000 pounds (lbs.) gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). The incremental cost of clean-fuel vehicles is exempt from state sales tax; this exemption expired February 28, 2004. These incentives apply to vehicles and fueling property placed in service by December 31, 2006. For more information, please contact the New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA) at 866- NYSERDA, via email at info@nyserda.org, or visit the web site at www.nyserda.org. (Reference Senate Bill 4523, 2003)"

My second choice would have been "It probably felt bigger because it is bigger
