Lets say a dumba$$ friend comes over, writes down your cd key for game X, drives home, then severs all contact between you and him. You can't go to his comp and remove the game since he lives several hundred miles away.

I can't play online now since he has my cd key. So is it illegal if i use a cdkey generator so i can play online? I have the box to game X, the manual, cd case, etc. It is not pirated.

It would still be against the law. He is now using your key. If he "stole" your key you can choose to take legal action. However, you may not break the law just so you both can play.

I would say the morally correct thing to do would be to hack his computer and trash all the data. You should be able to play fine then.

I don't think the authorities will do anything to reclaim something that doesn't even physically exist. And i'm not gonna dump a few thousand into a lawyer over a fugging game.

So who is breaking the law?

[clueless]CD-Key generators themselves are not illegal. However, using them to bypass pirated stuff is right?[/clueless]

I'm not so sure, but that is your only legal recourse that I can think of.

Another thing that came to mind, can you contact the game company, explain that the key had been stolen and have them issue you a new one canceling the old one? (not sure, I know this wouldnt work for all types of cd keys, depends on the game)

yes, that works for BF1942 at least. Sometime the CDkey has problems/something something, but they have where you can email them a picture of your cd case with the cd key on it and some other info, they'll cancel that one and issue you a new one. I'd say that's your best bet....and then hack his computer

Lets say he uses the phone, and leave the guy a message, if no reply lets say he turns him in.

My first reply to this thread is still the answer, have the balls to do what it takes.

It's pretty illegal. In fact the moment you enter the newly generated cdkey for the program, the Police, FBI, Swat Teams, National Guard, Army, Navy, Marines, and Air Force will be swarming around your house, setting up a tight perimeter. Don't try to fight them man. Just cower in fear under your computer desk, and pray that they don't send in the dogs first.

Personally, I would mess up that "friend" real bad. I would jump at the opportunity to go to his house the next time you get the chance and then install a virus or something on his computer while he is not paying attention. Or send him a "music CD" in the mail and tell him it works on a computer because it's an MP3 cd, but it would really have a virus and and autorun thingy.
