Hmmm... Just got my electricity bill. May consider culling herd :(

I leave my Celeron 800 on 24/7 for OGR. I am now considering leaving it off during the day. My electricity bills seem to be going thru the roof. My last two bills are about 50% more than previous. 🙁 Part of it is related to air conditioning or heating, but the rest is just the crazy prices.

Article:
Among these pitfalls is the fact that prices for electricity at the wholesale level have been far above the average of 4.3 cents a kilowatt hour that the government's experts predicted prior to May 1.

Instead, the weighted average price has been 5.6 cents a kilowatt hour for the first six months of the competitive market, or 30 per cent higher than forecast. At times it has spiked; it averaged 10.9 cents a kilowatt hour for the first week of September.

On the bright side, I've just ordered a 1 GHz G4 laptop. 😀 That will fly in RC5.

Just curious what is the normal bill and what did you pay now?

We are now averaging $200 a month for a regular 1 story 3 bedroom ranch here in Georgia now. It used to be around $130.

Sorry, I should have pointed out they're in Canadian bux. US$1 = CAD$1.56. So it's not that bad in the greater scheme of things. It's just bad compared to what we're used to.

My latest bill was about CAD$200 (US$130) for a 1 bedroom townhouse, which is only a little over 1000 square feet. Very small. Plus, I was in Hawaii for 2 weeks (and not using electricity) of the 2 month bill.

Even 10 cent per KWH doesn't sound bad!

Some of my bills

May 776KWH $90.98 or $0.117 per KWH :Q
June 834KWH $97.25 or $0.116 per KWH
July 1208KWH $137.68 or $0.113 per KWH - month with lots of A/C
Aug 1213KWH $138.23 or $0.113 per KWH - month with lots of A/C
Sept 864KWH $100.50 or $0.116 per KWH
Oct 945KWH $110.19 or $0.116 PER KWH

So I'm paying close to 12 cents per KWH and I'm running a Dual PIII 500e, Athlon 1200, PII 350, PII 266, 486DX66, Via gigapro, and TiVo running 24/7. Thankfully I have Natural Gas for my hot water and heat though the heat will bring up the electric bill some due to the circulator pump for the forced hot water.

Hmmmm.....this past month our electric bill was on $85 and I have 16 computers running in the house.

Dave, hasn't yours dropped with Summer being over?

I must be pretty lucky. I have a 1900 sq ft colonial that I heat, have 3 comps running 24/7 and I only pay around $141/month for gas and electric.

Month Year kWh $$$$$$
October 2001 7,625 $483.63
November 2001 7,126 $454.63
December 2001 6,116 $345.57
January 2002 6,765 $384.26
February 2002 5,905 $337.24
March 2002 5,550 $317.96
April 2002 6,010 $394.62
May 2002 7,718 $503.74
June 2002 7,584 $598.42
July 2002 9,882 $779.00
August 2002 7,977 $627.84
September 2002 8,923 $702.91
October 2002 10,195 $658.84

🙁

Damn, smokeball, your electric co must like you, I sure hope its a co-op so you may get some of that back 🙂

As a rule of thumb, I see an increase of about $10.00-$12.00 US per month for each machine I add to the herd.

I wish my electric was 10 cents/KWH. I'm paying 13 cents/KWH. And the electric bill has been running $200 - $300/month for a 1-bedroom apartment! :Q 🙁

Wow Poof

I thought Public Service of New Hampshire always had the highest rates in the country (thats what they keep telling us anyway). I guess thats a good thing, we know we'll always have power because we are stupid enough to pay the higher prices (why sell to califorinia at 5 cents when you can sell to New Hampshire for 12!!!) But your 13 is more than us.

Yeah well alot of things here in Philly are way up there but no one seems to want to talk about it... The cash fare for the dasm bus is $2.00 + 60 cents for a transfer. It's a disgrace... :|

But such is the sacrifice for DC! 😉

$85 for your size house:Q , that's fantastic JW. Yes, just asked Donna what last month's bill was with the AC unit off most of the month and it is back to normal at $120.

There you have it folks, concrete proof the machines are only like running a light bulb 24/7. Basically add the cost of one 100 Watt bulb running 24/7 for each machine. That is of course without a monitor.

Just to do the calcs with the 100 watt bulb analogy.

100 watt * 24 hrs = 2.4 KWH/day
2.4 KWH * 30 = 72 KWH/month

@ .10 $/KWH that is $7.20/month for each computer. Someone above said $10 /month per computer..that is a close enough rule of thumb.

Insert your own power rates where appropritate.

Yes Slatz, I would say we have a winner and could put that argument to bed forever. Wish it was that easy for the "Turn it off Vs Leave it On" argument related to electronics. I know leaving it on is better.

JW, I also know why my bill is slightly higher than your house even though much smaller. I bet you have a gas water heater. We have a 60 gal electric one here.

Speaking of gas, even though we don't use the gas all spring and summer till now, it still costs more than it should because ever since Georgia "deregulated" gas that means we pay $30 a month for a service charge of just having a gas account even though we don't use any. Certainly didn't have that before "deregulation". All that means is extra money for the greedy Companies and the Government to get more money out of us since the Government gets higher taxes because of the high service charge the Government now allows the "better" "more free" marketplace.

All of this reminds me of the story I heard once told by a Power Company employee.

He said a guy came in to get his "jumper" replaced for it seemed to have worn out! :Q

/anyone know where to get a jumper?/ he he j/k 😛 😀
