Hmmm. I just received a Win XP Pro Full Retail Box for "free" in the mail. What should I do with it?

Actually, it was a gift for pledging to Minnesota Public Radio.

Win 2K is working great for me on my Celly at 850/100. I won't be upgrading my hardware any time soon, I can't justify the cost.

So, should I sell this thing (still sealed), or install it on my old box. Will "all the pretty colors" of XP slow my system down too much?

They tell me the fair market value (for tax purposes) is $99.99. Is that right, or should I get more for selling it?

Just wondering?

Thanks, everyone!

Sell it to me 🙂 I could use a copy for my desktop 🙂 Not too expensive though...keep in mind, I can get it for around $107 (including tax) at my school's bookstore.

Sell it here on AT, or hold onto it for "someday." Always nice to have things like that around when a friend goes, "hey, you don't happen to have..." I've done that several times, find a hot deal on something and grab a couple for my buds. 🙂

If I do sell it, it looks like I'll need to send out a few PM's just before I post in FS/FT. 🙂

Someone will need to help me out and tell me how to get started on Heatware, or tell me if it still exists (I hope so). I did buy something from someone on AT once, but I never got an eval from him. I guess I don't understand how it works. 😱

It looks like the XP Pro OEM is around $120-140 on the e-tail market, but I haven't decided what I would sell this for. It's a sealed retail box (definitely not the upgrade) and it says version 2002 on the front cover, if that's important.

In case anyone wonders, I pledged $240 for one year to MPR (after years and years of listening for free) to receive this "gift."

<< Retail is about $299 on that. They all say "version 2002" on the box.

Holy buckets, that gift could pay for my entire membership! I guess the hosts of Sound Money must have come up with the $99.99 figure. 😉

(I'm still thinking about what to do with it, folks!)

The options seem relatively simple to me:

1) Sell it & pocket all the money. Retail is $300, you could probably get 2/3 that.
2) Sell it, buy XP Pro OEM, pocket the difference.
3) Keep it & use it.
4) Keep it & let it gather dust until 2008 at which point you give it to GoodWill & gain nothing from it.

That's the price for XP Home. This is Pro, which retails for $299 - like I already said.

Garfang,

They probably told you $99 because that's the cost of the Home upgrade. They were confused.

Actually that's the best idea. If you're known as being a computer geek and friends and family are constantly hounding you to fix their computers it makes life so much easier if you have all versions of Windows on hand. Heck I've got everything from DOS 6.22 up to Win2k pro. Granted I haven't used the older programs since the dawn of time, but you know that the minute I throw something out someone is going to need it (learned this one the hard way).

There's one on E-Bay for $160 with three hours to go. Maybe I will E-Bay it. 😛 (probably not)

It's definitely XP Professional, in the box.

Note that this is not the upgrade either. On the upper right corner of the box, it says for PCs without Windows.

I haven't decided on the price I will ask.

<< What I want to know is wtf are you doing pledging money to MPR. :disgust: >>

Well, they offered Windows XP Pro during their membership drive, so I called and put it on my credit card. Why is it so bad to finally give a little money to a public radio station that I've listened to for news and information almost every day for many years?

Damn... Oh, that makes sense... I think $199.99 is the price through the U bookstore or something. 😀
