Hmmm.... How to get the xbox to work via XBox High Def pack?

An xbox i purchased from another AT member just arrived...

Works fine using the included A/V cables.... However, when i hook it up via the new Microsoft High Definition Kit i purchased, it comes out all scrambled.

Now, my HDTV does not support 720p, but it does support 480i, 480p, and 1080i.

Any idea how i can adjust this setting? I cant see well enough to navigate the menus.

start up the xbox without a disk in and go into the settings option

BTW does the hdtv upscale everything to 1080i or if the game doesnt support it do 480

No, my HDTV does not upscale everything. But i havent even gotten to any games yet, this is just trying to get the dashboard to work.

hook it up without using the hi def pack and navigate to the display options at the boot up menu. Turn off 720p.

also, make sure your cables are hooked up correctly and tightly. Are you getting any picture at all? maybe your hidef cables are screwed.

Why not plug the regular connection it to see if it is not scrambled and set it accordingly then plug back in the hd cable

I think the dashboard only displays in 480i or 480p so 720p shouldn't be the issue (I'm not 100% sure on this though). What you can do is try pulling and holding both triggers and then pushing the both the analog stick buttons (the buttons pushed by pressing in on the analog sticks) at the same time. This switches the dashboard between 480i and 480p. This may not work if the dashboard is an older version. You could always plug in a standard or advanced AV pack and this will force the XBox to not use any of the HDTV modes and just plug it in via composite or S-video.

Boot up menu? Are you talking about the dashboard?

BTW, are you sure the input on your TV supports 480i? Some HDTVs have wideband component inputs that won't support a 480i signal. My TV is like this. I could never even see my non-hacked MS dashboard without switching inputs until they updated the dashboard a while back to support 480p.

[edit] And did you try my suggestion about pulling the triggers and pushing the analog stick buttons? Surely the input it is plugged into will support either 480i or 480p.

corrrecto, if you have xbox live, i believe it autoupdates your dashboard to 480p.

Yep, positive of it. In fact i unplugged my HD DVR tuner which was broadcasting my SD stations in 480i from the same component jack.

The good thing is you don't even need to have XBox Live to get the dashboard updates. You can just select the XBox Live tab in the dashboard and it will update the dashboard for you before you even sign in.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

Ok, sorry guys... Looks like my color blind eyes struck again...

Prolly would have helped if i plugged the damn BLUE cable in the BLUE connector and the GREEN cable into the GREEN connector. Not visa-versa 😀

My bad 😀

Now how can i tell if its in 480i or 480p (the dashboard that is)?

Hmmm... it is usually easy to tell the difference, but if your TV is upcoverting then you may not be able to see the difference. Pull both triggers and push both analog stick buttons to switch the dash between 480i and 480p. You might be able to tell by switching back and forth.

hahah, honest mistake. see what thraxen said below. all being said, does anyone care if their dash is in 480p?

also, just to note, if you play dvds on your stock xbox, they can only play in 480i. something about msft not paying a fee to enable p-scan...

BTW, anyone else get annoyed by the fact that MS didn't give the analog stick buttons real names? On the PS/PS2 they are called L3 and R3. I hate trying to explain which buttons I'm talking about. It's much easier to say "push L3" than it is to say "push the left analog stick button".

I have to care because my wideband component input won't display 480i 🙁

Ahhh ok, using 480p, the dashboard looks sharper, i can notice the difference...

Last question, do i have to enable 480p and/or widescreen in Halo 2 itself, or will it just take the settings from the dashboard?

I have it enabled in the dashboard, but i dunno, Halo 2 dosent seem to look all that good. THere must be a setting wrong somewhere.

i've noticed that even when set to widescreen - the radar and target thingy are still stretched, however everything else seems to scale correctly. I seem to remember somebody else mentioning the same thing on these forums before.
