Hmmm... DSLR - Make the switch to Canon? or stay w/ Nikon?

Well, i really like the Canon 10-22. Theres been times the 12 on my Tokina just could be a bit wider. Also, I think i would like some faster glass, like the Tokina 80-200 2.8 which my friend recently picked up used and loves. Other than that, it just seems that comparable ranges between the canon-nikon line, the canon's seem a bit less expensive.

Also, theres not many features I would need from the higher models, as the XTi/D80 seem to fix what i dislike about my D70.

Sigma makes a 10-20 for the Nikon mount, but i have heard that the Canon 10-22 trumps all of the Nikon offerings. Nikon does make a fantastic 80-200 f/2.8 as well (about $800)

And you're right, after i bought my Nikon stuff, i have noticed that Canon's comparable lenses are just a bit cheaper. I may switch once a 40d comes out.

I really do love my EFS 10-22. The one lens I've never thought of selling while having a crop DSLR.

From what I have read it really has a unique way enhancing blue skies.

The XTi viewfinder sucks, especially coming from the D70. Is an upgrade from the D70 really that warranted? It doesn't seem like it if you are a pro.

Seconded. Once you're invested in a family of equipment (setting aside the Nikon v. Canon argument), it doesn't make sense economically to switch.

Look at it this way: the cost of switching your stuff to Canon-compatible equipment will probably put you into the next Nikon price bracket.

Same is true vice-versa of course.

In computer terms, it's like saying you should upgrade to a Core 2 Duo E6300 when you're running an Opteron 140. You technically can, but for the money you'd spend doing it, you could buy a very top-end Opteron chip and likely get better performance.

Here's something that might interest you, though the Canikon bias is strong around here.

Sony is apparently issuing a follow-on to the Maxxum 7D next year. Rough guesses are min-10MP, excellent viewfinder, in-body IS, sturdy construction, and hopefully the ergonomics of the 7D (ie., buttons instead of menus!). All of your lenses would be IS/VR/SSS, and there's a nice Tamron at 18-200 (and 55-200, 28-300 and others). Also, the new Pentax is quite nice by all accounts, but I understand their lens lineup is a little limited.

Just a thought if you wanted to expand your horizons a bit. I won't give up my 7D until I find something with the same ergonomics and access to controls that doesn't cost several thousand dollars!

I'm in the same boat with my D50. I want either a D80 or a 30D. The inconsistent matrix metering of the D80 is scaring me away. I also think I want to switch to Canon for high ISO music gig photography. Plus the 30D's 5fps for motor sports. I just like the idea of Canon doing their sensors in house, and there top of the line bodies are just awesome, if I ever get there in the future. It's tough decision though for sure.

How many lenses have you bought for your D50? If not many then it's not hard to switch.

Ok, well after reading through the comments and researching a bit, I am leaning towards going the D80 route. The amount that I would spend getting something to replace my 18-200vr (which mind you, the reason i bought it was for travelling, so damn nice to have one decent all around lens with VR), would cost much more than the amt i would save going with Canon.

Looking over the reviews as well, it looks like Nikon has come a long way with their high iso noise, still not as good as the CMOS in canon, but markedly better than that of my D70. I guess I also like the fact that my Nikon has never failed me, nor given me a single error, while my friend has had three 20d's crap out on him for various reasons.

Anyway, thanks again for all the comments. I think im sticking with the Nikkonians

Well, if they make one I guess it has to be competitive with...

Nikkor 18-200 F3.5-5.6 VR
Tamron 18-200 F3.5-6.3
Sigma 18-200 F3.5-6.3

So, yeah, I guess at least a F3.5-5.6 or better.

Not as good ISO as Canon? Only if you compare it to a Canon that costs 3 times as much. The Nikon D80=Canon rebel xti and 30D <<< Canon 5D but the 5d is ~$3000

I have Canon gear and there's no way I'd switch to Nikon after the relatively modest investment I've made in Canon glass.

Honestly, I don't see that there's much difference. Each has its positives and negatives but they are both very very good and comparable. Since you've already made the investment in Nikon I'd stick with it unless there is something about your current gear that you just can't live with.

Don't listen to your friends. They don't know what they're talking about.

BTW-I have a Canon 30D and it's a fantastic camera. I never even considered the XT/XTI. I love my 30D!

Hmmm, so my friend picked up an XTI today (gonna try it tomm), and i saw the pics coupled with his 28-135 IS and it looked pretty darn nice...

XTI - $700ish
28-135 IS - $400 (or less if i go used)
10-22 - $600 (used)

Id have almost the same range (short of missing 135-200, which I could always pick up a macro later down the line) and be almost at the same price I sold my equipment for....
