Hmmm... Dead laser printer?

Laser printer got stuck printing two days ago, paper just stopped halfway through...

Pulled the paper out...

No pages stuck, checked inside, restarted printer, printed again.

Started making a WEIRD noise, no idea what it was.... Just turned it off and left it until today.

Now when i print, there are two very distint faint spots in the printout, almost like the toner isnt working in those two spots...

The toner isnt that old, tried shaking it, no luck, the spots wont go away...

Time for another cheap laser printer?

I have a laser printer with a similar problem, except it leaves black streaks on the paper.

Maybe just needs to be cleaned or something.

I've just been planning to take it apart for parts. I'm sure there are some goodies in there.

Might check if this (which is an excellent entry level laser) is available locally.

Samsung ML-1710

Not bad at all for $49, but the toner costs $80 so id rather not get a new toner if its gonna do the same...

just tried printing again, making a strange grinding noise and not grabbing paper...

Fuser or imaging drum. Probably the imaging drum.

What he said. They're usually sold together as one unit.

Fuser & imaging drum sold as one?

Not likely.

Black streaks could be either, a faded spot repeating down the page could be any number of things - Most likely a bad toner cartridge.

If you can find a service manual for your printer there is likely a table showing repetitive defect intervals, you can precisely identify the source from the interval of repetition.

Any idea why it would be making a grinding/loud humming noise when trying to grab paper though now? No paper seems to be stuck.

Again, could be any number of things.

Bad clutch or solenoid, broken or damaged gear.

No way to tell really without opening it up & taking a look at it.

You're right, it's late for me, my mind is wandering. I was thinking toner and drum, but said fuser and drum.

Horizontal faded lines are not on the list of problems.... All the other issues show defective toner, but it only specifically mentions vertical faded lines, not horizontal.

Well since a new toner is $80, and not guaranteed to fix the problem...

Im just gonna shell out some more and get the laser printers i was eyeing a few weeks ago, with the scanner/copier function built right in...

OfficeMax appears to be having a sale on four such models starting Sunday, if you do indeed decide to opt for that route.

Link.

There are also new $50 off $250 OfficeMax coupons (at least, I just received one via e-mail) should you purchase one of the upper priced models.
