Dunno if this is a HW prob though...

My office comp has been very laggy since yesterday. Just noticed that my CPU is @ 100% usage all the time. Same with memory, 100% reserved.
I checked for viruses w. Norton+latest updates= nothing. Ran Ad-Aware= nothing. Terminated all progs from task manager except systray and explorer... still same thing. Any other ideas???

Thanks!

chipset drivers?

also, some ms updates can screw with yoru processes. Helped some people isolate that. Happened to me once. Installed a patch and it messed with everything, slowed down.

on the other hand, my computer was running like crap after a fresh install. Cleaned up and updated the chipset and it's good to go.

I believe the update Sid is talking about has now been removed for sometime, shouldn't have to worry about anything on Windows Update right now.

yEAH SORRY,

This is a P3/1Ghz, Intel 815 mobo w. 512Mb ram, Intel 10/100 NIC and GF2MX graphics. 40Gb IBM 60GXP HDD, LG 40x12x40x CD-RW and FDD. That's all.
Your basic office setup...

AND YES, running Win98se :D Rebooted several times, but the cpu and mem usage shoot straight to 100%.

I'm clueless... and I am here the one who should know

EDIT: checking now for latest inf files...

Well,

got all the latest drivers already installed... there is new bios though. But this problem just appeared, this thing has been working lik charm for over a year now.

Any viruses there that could do this... maybe Norton missed something?

It's possible Norton missed something, but its doubtful.. Do you have a firewall? Could be a trojan sucking up some serious resources for something/someone.

Are you connected permanently to the internet/network? If yes, disconnect the network cable and see what happens,,,,

-We have a firewall (W2k3 server as DHCP/NAT/Firewall with Norton firewall)...
-took out the network cable... no change

2nd

-Downloaded and installed speedfan... also shows 100% CPU usage. just like task manager...

AAARGH...

it's gettin worse, whenever I try to open a program, a pic whatever the comp pauses for while (~10secs). Nothing happens, it just locks for a short time and then goes on...

... time to backup.

Could this be some piece of HW failing... my precious IBM 60GXP??? Could it cause something like this?

EDIT: NOW GETTING ERROR MESSAGES "WRUN32.DLL HAS PERFORMED ILLEGAL..." WHATS HAPPENING :Q

My advice... save the headaches and backup then format\reinstall Windows.

Did you try booting in Safe Mode? I had that problem for awhile, but it turns out a virus had infected my dllhost.exe file. I scanned with Panda Software's free online scanner, since I don't currently have Norton installed. I've had Norton miss stuff before, but not often. Have you tried SpyBot? If I wasn't able to fix that in a day's work, I would Fdisk it and kill the partition, format and re-install. That way you make sure you get a nice clean install.

Glad you got it fixed. 1yr? 98 is only good for like 3 months ;)

:)

If everyone else at work ( I assume it's work ) running 2k, why aren't you?

I just upgraded our servers to w2k3, and all laptops have XPPro (mine too), but there are still some old COBOL (yes that's right) programs that will not work under W2K or XP. Therefore we still have some W98 installations...
