this one has been buggin me for a while..
what's the difference in meaning between...

1. Used by <insert date>
2. Best before <insert date>

I mean.. is it ok to eat something if something is older than the date on best before?
I mean.. it may not the best..but is it still o...k?

best before probably means you won't get sick but it might taste like crap. use by means you might get sick

There is a difference. Per FDA and IDC labeling rules, this is how it works.

Used by - To imply the product MUST be used by expiration date. After the expiration of the date, the product is considered unfit for human consumption for fear of possible product degradation, rendering possible sickness, illness, or other unwanted effects. EXAMPLE - meat, milk, etc

Best before - To imply the product SHOULD be used by the expiration date for guaranteed product freshness and stability. After the expiration date, it can be consumed, at discression. The product may deteriorate, but will not cause illness. EXAMPLE - Crackers, pretzels, etc.

Sell By means it's got to be sold by then or the retailer has to toss it. It's not an expiration date. Milk is good for weeks after the Sell By date, so are bagged salads.
