Well recently I made a deal with a friend trading power supplies and some other stuff. I modded the PSU with a new fan so the warrenty is void. He has had it for a couple of months now and yesterday it went kuh-put. It would barely give him any power then it would shut down. But now he wants me to give him his old power supply back that im using. It really isnt my fault and it really isnt his that this happened. I had no idea it would die like that. There were no real signs of it failing. My question is should I give him back the one I traded him for? I just modded this one with a new fan so it would kind of be a pain in the ass. I could just slip him half the cost of what ita worth and have him get a new one. But I am REALLY broke right now and cant afford to do that.

If he knew there was a new fan in it and it had no warranty, too bad.

If he didn't know about that, you owe him a power supply.

If he knew you modded it and he accepted it as such, it's his. If you want to remain friends give him the old one back or buy him a different one.

But if I give him the old one back then I wont have a computer. Im not going to put a PSU that I know IS going to break soon into my pc. His friendship means a great deal to me. I think Im just gonna tell him I will slip him half of the price when I can, and that there is nothing I can do right now about it.

If he's buying a modified PSU then its on him to know it may go kaputt before he expects it to. His loss IMHO.

Might I ask why you traded p/s?

Giving him half the cost is the nice thing to do but, for him to hold you responsable and want his old p/s isnt quite fair to you on his part. Would you have done the same if the situation were reveresed. Expecting your old p/s back even more so would he give you half the cost of a new one. Thats why I give my friends old/used parts and never trade or sell them things.

Some food for thought.
Give him the money and maybe mention that if your p/s goes dead anytime soon you would expect the same help.

Well, at least you're being good about this ordeal, instead of blowing it out of proportion...sucks that it's nobody's fault, and yet at least one guy has to pay for it, but it sounds like half the cost of a new one would be the best bet. He should understand your situation too, so hopefully he won't get too riled up.
