No Lifer
ok got Vista setup (dual boot FTW!).

Xp rarly used much memory. so 2 gig was always enough. But loaded Vista and have yet to see less then 46%

will i see a diffrence if i go to 4 gigs?

gotta say so far i like it. i like the sidebar. that is kinda neat.

also can't get it to recognize my MP3's that are in a folder on a diffrent drive. says i do not have permission. i swear i gave it permission. grr

Yes, you'll have 46% of 4 gigs used instead of 2. 😛

Seriously though it's designed to use more rather than let it go unused.

View it as "XP failed to use more memory" rather than "Vista uses more memory".

Yep Vista makes use of ram, does not go wasted,in my case I have 4GB and Task Manager states 2910mb is cached with 26mb free, that's how efficient Vista is 🙂 .

With 2gb of RAM, Vista uses somewhere around 46% upon boot. With 4gb of RAM, Vista used about 38% upon boot. You do the math.

More info: my 4gb machine's 38% figure is with what is essentially a clean install. the 2gb machine is an HP laptop.

ahh gotcha.

guess i will stick with 2gig..unless it goes on sale! LOL.

i remember hearing people say you have to have at least 4 gig for Vista.

now if i could find a good digtal clock for the sidebar. the one i found is 24/hour clock. i want a 12/hr ohwell so far thats the only thing that is bugging me. It is faster and looks nicer.

not sure on if its more stable. but i havnet had any crash's

No way. Sure it runs great with 4GB, but not necessary. It will run fine with 1GB and 2GB is a nice sweet spot.

Well, what the OP was saying is that it uses nearly half his 2GB of RAM just to load (and maybe run a few basic apps), which is indeed quite a bit more than XP. This has nothing to do with Superfetch, which will of course use most of the other 54% for caching (which is a good thing).

I like Vista and all, but I'm not going to deny that it uses a lot more RAM than XP, even without Superfetch.

also i should have mentioned this was when Vista first came out (not sure if that matters).

heh since i retired i have not kept up on this crap. kinda wish i was still working. Vista is damn expensive! when i was working i was a reseller and would get copies sent to me for free all the time. heh

Just now takes forever for your hard drive to stop idling after rebooting or turning on your pc. Thats what sleep mode is for though. 😉
